Trying to Capture What My Eyes See. My inexpensive, little digital camera is not adequate to capturing what even my half-blind eyes can see! The morning sun shining through the maple trees golden leaves is breathtaking in real life. After taking these pictures I turned around and there was a gorgeous moon!

American Duchess: 1770s Polonaise - Progress, but Slowly!
http://americanduchess.blogspot.com/2015/04/1770s-polonaise-progress-but-slowly.html
Tuesday, April 28, 2015. 1770s Polonaise - Progress, but Slowly! 1770s Polonaise - the skirts are drawn up with cords, to create the three partition effect the gown is named for. Work on this crazy froofy dress comes in spurts, but now that I only have about a month to get it done, I best knuckle down! I can see why it's not a style made by many. It's *complicated.* Seriously. To clarify, this type*. And if I had it to do over again, there are a hundred things I would do differently. Luckily, though,...

Bygone Elegance: No Smurfs were harmed in the making of this fabric...I promise!
http://bygone-elegance.blogspot.com/2016/02/no-smurfs-were-harmed-in-making-of-this.html
Monday, 1 February 2016. No Smurfs were harmed in the making of this fabric.I promise! It's taken me a while to get round to posting about this, but last week I had some great fun dyeing my corsetry satin from white to blue. I wanted something a little more fancy for my 1880s corset. And, after looking at various originals. For inspiration, I settled on mid blue. Rather than buy a blue satin, I decided to use Vena Cava'. S cotton backed corsetry satin. Uh oh - pale purple fabric! The dried fabric - AFTER.

Bygone Elegance: Another HSM Challenge complete (almost!) - Girl's 1850s/1860s underwear
http://bygone-elegance.blogspot.com/2016/01/another-hsm-challenge-complete-almost.html
Sunday, 17 January 2016. Another HSM Challenge complete (almost! This project took a little longer than anticipated but, after a few mishaps and frustrations, it is (almost) finished. Designing and making children's costumes has been on my list for some time as I love miniature things and the idea of creating a tiny outfit with all of the features of adult 1860s dress, just shorter and cuter, really appealed to me. I was particularly inspired by photographs, fashion plates and originals like these:.

Bygone Elegance: The best of intentions...and a new project
http://bygone-elegance.blogspot.com/2016/06/the-best-of-intentionsand-new-project.html
Tuesday, 21 June 2016. The best of intentions.and a new project. And then life got in the way, as it invariably does. That said, there are things that are sometimes more important than sewing. Working and earning money to pay for the sewing to start with and needless to say looking after yourself, your home and the people you love do have to come first. To document this project I have set up a separate blog dedicated to "Becoming Victoria". The plan, believe it or not, is to post updates daily (or as...

Bygone Elegance: Slow progress...
http://bygone-elegance.blogspot.com/2016/01/slow-progress.html
Saturday, 30 January 2016. I have been a little quiet for the past few days, partly due to a horrible cold and persistent headache. However, between trying to sleep off my headache and working my day job, I have made some progress on my 1880s corset. Hopefully I will get round to posting about this shortly to update you on my experiments with blue dye and pattern mockups. In the meantime, this is just a quick promotion for my Etsy shop. Where my girls' mid Victorian underwear is now for sale. The Prince ...

Bygone Elegance: December 2015

Sunday, 27 December 2015. Countdown to New Year No3: Two 1940s frocks. And the black and red ensemble for a "Down in the Shelters" dance evening. Having said that, I have worn both of them since for other things too - I like wearing them so much! The pattern I chose also included a jacket which I made in black velvet - unfortunately in these pictures it is obscuring the beautiful sweetheart neckline of the dress. Still, I love these pictures. And that leaves just one more post to go in my countdown to th...
