Local food rules

Saturday, 1 November 2014. Days with an abundance of apples part 1. This year, the apples have just kept coming.for the last two months, I've been eating them raw, in Dorset apple cakes, apple crumbles, and there are pounds and pounds of slightly stewed apples in the freezer ready for more warming crumbles to come throughout the rest of autumn and winter. Stir and cover tautly with cling film. Now this is a jelly which goes extremely well with lamb and my lot vastly prefer it to mint sauce. It's also...

Local food rules: December 2013

http://www.localfoodrules.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 25 December 2013. Wordless Wednesday - Happy Christmas! Wednesday, 18 December 2013. Wordless Wednesday - last Wednesday. Thursday, 5 December 2013. A dark day.and night. It's been a wild and windy day here in the UK, with rain, sleet and snow up north, lots of flooding around our coastline and much damage which has caused the deaths of two people already. And then as the lights came back on, and power was restored, we heard about the death of Nelson Mandela in South Africa. Simple template&#4...

Local food rules: July 2014

http://www.localfoodrules.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html

Thursday, 31 July 2014. A day which redeemed itself eventually. Well, what a day! I managed to leave work an hour over shift , and got to the car park opposite the BBC . When I say opposite, it is as the crow flies. It used be a quick little walk across by another little car park, but at the moment it's a longer walk. The new Jubilee Square which is under construction has cut off the entrance to our building, and we have to go around the block to go through the back door at the moment. Which is nice.

Local food rules: The day of the food fair

http://www.localfoodrules.blogspot.com/2014/10/the-day-of-food-fair.html

Friday, 10 October 2014. The day of the food fair. Another year, another Melton Food Festival.it's an annual tradition eagerly awaited by many in these here parts. There's a chance to taste something new, talk to local producers and those from further afield, have a drink with friends and perhaps at some stage sit down and watch one of the cookery demonstrations. I've been going for a number of years.including those festivals which were held at nearby Brooksby Hall in huge marquees. And it would have bee...

Thinking of the days: June 2015

http://thinkingofthedays.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html

Thinking of the days. I love blogging about. Tuesday, 23 June 2015. The day we went orff to Ascot. This time last week, the picnic was packed and I was slipping into something uncomfortable. A pair of shoes with high heels.not totteringly high, but high enough for me. Oh, and I was putting on a frock.the girls and I were off to the races. To Ascot for the first day. So, it was race time. First stop was to see the Royals in their carriages. And to have a look at the runners in the first race. So I chose n...

Thinking of the days: The day a banana got in the way in the bookshop

http://thinkingofthedays.blogspot.com/2015/06/the-day-banana-got-in-way-in-bookshop.html

Thinking of the days. I love blogging about. Sunday, 21 June 2015. The day a banana got in the way in the bookshop. There was a slight kerfuffle as I walked into my favourite bookshop yesterday. Two new people were on duty and one of them was battling with the till and the credit card machine to everyone's delight and consternation. But did this matter? Nina threw herself into her new role.with a little help from Debbie James who owns the bookshop. I only know Jon Reed through Twitter.we both love li...

http://thinkingofthedays.blogspot.com/2015/07/days-of-loving-my-cookery-cooks.html

Thinking of the days. I love blogging about. Friday, 24 July 2015. Days of loving my cookery books. Ermthere's 90 of them. Yes, I have 90 recipe books and books about food. I didn't realise I had so many .at a guess last year I thought there may be 60. Oops. Some of them are on the bookshelves in the kitchen. Others can be found on the dining table,. By my bed, on the coffee table.wherever I sit and read, there's bound to be a book about food close by. I also tend to use what I've got.sometimes I'm n...

Wednesday, 24 September 2014. Wordless Wednesday - An Unusual Type of Pot Plant! Sunday, 21 September 2014. Last week it was our wedding anniversary. It is 33 years since we married, 35 since we met. We were little more than children back then and we have in many ways grown up together. We don't often buy each other gifts but my husband always gets me flowers. This year it was a stunning bunch of freesias from De Jager. Would I have had three auburn haired children? Would I have been happy? A few weeks a...

Alex Gutteridge writes...: Days Out

http://alex-gutteridge.blogspot.com/2015/03/days-out.html

Friday, 20 March 2015. Days out can seem like such an indulgence. Ever since I first started writing there has been this constant conflict - when I'm writing I always think of all of the other things which need doing and when I'm not placing words on the page I feel that I should be! But by the time we emerged from the tube station at Leicester Square a lemony spring sunshine was brightening the buildings and lifting our spirits. The exhibition focuses on Sargent's non-commissioned work so there is a fre...

Friday, 17 April 2015. Thank-you for dropping by and have a good week. Friday, 3 April 2015. I've always loved words, ever since I was tiny. I learned to talk early and I was taught the value of words from an early age, that words are important, that they have weight and power. We can all recount words which have hurt us. They linger long in our memories. Kind words too can make all the difference to our day. Thank-you for dropping by and have a lovely Easter. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). A couple of days...

http://alex-gutteridge.blogspot.com/2015/05/paradise-on-earth.html

Sunday, 10 May 2015. It's been a busy few weeks and sometimes I've felt like a hamster on a wheel. But the week before last we got away for a few days to Seville and Granada. It was blissful. Seville is beautiful, friendly and full of life. I would go back in a heartbeat. This was the view from our hotel window. Here is a taste of what we found when arriving at the top of the hill - a place brimming with history, exquisite carvings and colourful tiles but also somewhere overflowing with light and shade, ...

Monday, 22 December 2014. How's the writing going? Someone asked the other day. Fine," I answered. "It's good.". A clear gaze, a pause; they were waiting for more. Actually," I said, "I'm not writing at the moment. I'm planning.". Why did this statement make me feel so guilty? I'll keep you posted but whatever the outcome it won't be wasted. I'm convinced that it's good to try different ways of working from time to time. Friday, 12 December 2014. Cranberry and Orange Relish. So here it is, the easiest Cr...

Tuesday, March 27, 2018. Homemade Pickles Are A Breeze with HomeBrew. I first started making my own refrigerator pickles a couple of years ago thanks to a bountiful cucumber crop from my garden. Refrigerator pickles are what I consider, in the best possible way, slacker pickles. Compared to traditional methods of pickling, the refrigerator version isnt as complicated or as lengthy a process. Well, now thanks to my March Degustabox. A product that makes refrigerator pickles even easier! I cannot get enoug...
