The Wandering Naturalist: December 2012
http://swallowtailedkite.blogspot.com/2012_12_01_archive.html
Saturday, December 8, 2012. Back to the Tropics! In about 16 hours, I will be on a flight back to the tropics. This time, the destination is Mexico's Yucatan peninsula, Belize and Guatemala. I, along with a couple friends, will be alternately backpacking, birding, hitchhiking, bus-touring this region for the next two weeks. Our goal is to see as many birds as possible including as many of the region's endemic species as possible. After that, we'll head north to Ria Lagartos estuarine preserve for some co...

Where stuff goes by default. Ye Old Comments and Suggestions. Aug 11th, 2008 at 11:09 AM. The C and S book was more than its name suggests. It was actually a discussion board, the only difference being that YS faithfully answered each comment in his Courier type. I was "Tursiops" (yes, I've been using genera as pseudonyms for 25 years) and. Was "Little Sidhe." I wrote in green ink, she in purple. I can't really remember the discussions we had (probably dreck, that hasn't changed! May 20th, 2008 at 4:34 AM.

Wednesday, April 25, 2012. Book review: Petrels, Albatrosses and Storm-petrels of North America. What an. awesome. book! What else can I say about it? Let's see, it's a must have for anyone wanting to study pelagic (that means sea-going! The detail in the book is amazing and the photographs are even more so. But enough of my describing, let's take a look inside the pages:. Take the first page of the introduction for example. Mr Howell starts with the basics: What are Tubenoses? This one above details a f...

Tuesday, March 19, 2013. Backpacking Mexico and Belize: a slightly different tropical adventure. Pt 3. We awoke to the raucous screeching of Olive-throated Parakeets overhead. A Tropical Pewee called from somewhere nearby, Social Flycatchers squealed in the distance, Yucatan Jays called back and forth to each other and Orange Orioles whistled away. An Altimira Oriole soon joined them. We leaped out of our tents, grabbed the bare necessities for the day and took off through the early morning light. While ...

Wednesday, February 5, 2014. Book Review: Lost Animals: Extinction and the Photographic Record by Errol Fuller. I just received this excellent book in the mail a few days ago and have taken some time to page through it. The photos, together with the well-written species accounts, including excerpts from writings of the day and reminiscings from firsthand experiences, the book is an excellent piece to have in your library or on your coffee table at home. The Wandering Naturalist: November 2012
http://swallowtailedkite.blogspot.com/2012_11_01_archive.html
Friday, November 30, 2012. A cold, bleak dawn found us well on our way, headed north and east past Green Bay towards Door County where a Northern Hawk-owl had been found. On the way, we chattered about birding, records, chasing, doing a big year, etc., the usual kind of chatter you hear from crazy birders like us. After a short stop in Green Bay to grab some food (apparently Rob can't run on just birding alone. who does that? Jk :D ) we were well on our way to where the Hawk-owl was hanging out. The Hawk...
