August 31, 2014. We arrived in Beijing early this afternoon and were met at the airport by our driver Mr. Wong and our personal tour guide, Bat (which he told us is short for Batman). I think that Bat and I will get on very well. This evening, we walked around to get our bearings and have a meal and also got caught in a heavy downpour. Marg and I met one of the farmers, who was digging a hole for a well on his farmland in 1974, and found a head thinking it was a ghost. I said to my guide “he must be a very rich man now, not knowing that she would translate”. He just looked at me and smiled. We are expecting to see more of Shanghai, which is an enormous city, when we spend the day with our tour guide tomorrow. So far, Shanghai is entirely diferent to Beijing. September 8, 2014. We have spent the last four days on a cruise ship on the Yangtze River. It was an incredible journey on the third largest river in the world. We boarded the ‘Victoria.
