Martin Hodges' Wildlife Blog

Thursday, 19 July 2012. Signing off a chapter of blogging. Things have been a little on the quiet side recently so I've been busy playing and tinkering with some new stuff. The end result means the end of this blog as we know it. but a new one has appeared. Some two and half years of blogging and 50,000 hits later, it was time for a rethink and to smarten things up as everything evolves. Esticadinho Nature is the new site. you will find it by clicking here. Links to this post. Sunday, 1 July 2012. The we...

Martin Hodges' Wildlife Blog: Marbled White Spot first at Tophill Low NR

http://martinhodgessbirdingblog.blogspot.com/2012/06/marbled-white-spot-first-at-tophill-low.html

Saturday, 9 June 2012. Marbled White Spot first at Tophill Low NR. As the non-friendly moth trapping weather continues into another week, it really is a case of making the best of it at Tophill Low NR, East Yorkshire, although finding the enthusiasm is proving to be difficult. And today it caught me out as I was wasn't paying attention. Fortunately, Richard Sears was on the ball as he pulled out the site's first Marbled White Spot. Just two of the species that have been encountered on the in the last week.

Martin Hodges' Wildlife Blog: September 2011

http://martinhodgessbirdingblog.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html

Sunday, 25 September 2011. Mixtas and Med Gulls. After a week in the office it was back into the field for the weekend. Tophill Low, East Yorks again - maybe I need a change of habitat! The Odonata transect on Saturday turned up some reasonable numbers with 1 Southern Hawker, 3 Brown Hawker, 57 Migrant Hawker (above), 87 Common Darters and 1 Ruddy Darter not to be sniffed at for the time of year. Alas, no Emerald Damselflies could be found. Hopefully next year will turn up more in the boxes. When it is a...

Martin Hodges' Wildlife Blog: December 2011

http://martinhodgessbirdingblog.blogspot.com/2011_12_01_archive.html

Saturday, 31 December 2011. Life in the playground 2011. I thought I'd post a selection of highlights, seen by my eyes, in 2011. So many brilliant days out in 2011, spent lots of time with some great people who inspire me, enjoyed lots of surprises and no disappointments. If only I blogged everything, it wouldn't be right to share my best days! Maybe some surprises in 2012 :). Links to this post. So the final Med of 2011.cracking record shot! 2 Caspian Gulls (pending acceptance once I submit descriptions).

Martin Hodges' Wildlife Blog: April 2012

http://martinhodgessbirdingblog.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 24 April 2012. Despite the earliest start ever to an Odonata season in Yorkshire, the weather seems to have held things up slightly, with nothing more than 30 Large Red Damselflies on Saturday at Tophill Low NR, East Yorkshire. Everything found was either a teneral or emerging, with no sign of any mature individuals. The poor weather is also keeping the moth numbers down. Very little in the traps over the weekend, with only a couple of Muslin Moths new for the year. Links to this post. So 2012 s...

Martin Hodges' Wildlife Blog: May 2012

http://martinhodgessbirdingblog.blogspot.com/2012_05_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 30 May 2012. Hairy Dragonflies hit a new Yorkshire high. Yes 193 Hairy Dragonflies! A count almost three times as high as the previous site, and Yorkshire, record! Please bear in mind that only around six or seven years ago seeing one was a major record! There were also plenty of Red-eyed Damselflies along the length of the canal, with a count of 679. The majority of these were adults on lilypads, though there was a good number of tenerals coming off, including this one below. Possibly the fir...

The Quiet Road to Nyvoll | Tony McLean's East Yorkshire Wildlife Diary

https://tonymclean.wordpress.com/2015/01/09/the-quiet-road-to-nyvoll

Tony McLean's East Yorkshire Wildlife Diary. Wildlife photography in East Yorkshire. The Quiet Road to Nyvoll. Yesterday, I found myself scouring the map for a new area to explore. The weather forecast was distinctly unpromising; a short break in the cloud cover was promised at around 1:00 am but there would be a stiff breeze from the south-east. I had been festering for most of the day and I needed to get out. Posted in Nature Photography. And tagged " 2015 Tony McLean". Nikon 14 - 24 f2.8 G". You are c...

Seeing the light | Tony McLean's East Yorkshire Wildlife Diary

https://tonymclean.wordpress.com/2015/01/15/seeing-the-light

Tony McLean's East Yorkshire Wildlife Diary. Wildlife photography in East Yorkshire. I was sat in a bar in Alta a few night’s ago slowly savouring a rather expensive beer and casually re-reading Steinbeck’s ‘Of Mice and Men’ on my iPad. For those of you who haven’t had the opportunity of reading this short but beautifully written novella, I would highly recommend doing so. Essentially, it’s about loneliness and it reflected my mood perfectly. Well, I’m sorry to say that I shall be leaving Alta tomo...
