January 2017 – Math Meanderings

https://mathedjax.wordpress.com/2017/01

Just my musings…I like to teach…I want to learn…I need to reflect. Things I’ve Been “Reading” #Hoopla #MTBoSblogsplosion. January 26, 2017. I’ve been into “reading” while driving for a while now. About the same time that I stopped pumping in the car, I wanted to continue to own the 45 minute commute to and from work and decided that recorded books would be a great way to go. Below is a running list of the titles and my thoughts since the beginning of 2017. You Can Heal Your Life. You Are A Badass. Show s...

Just my musings…I like to teach…I want to learn…I need to reflect. January 10, 2017. Last night I attended an online training. The training was led by Justin Baeder. I’ve included this reflection here as I approached today’s institute sessions with that same open mind and I really think that I have benefitted from that mind set today. Instruct them to use Remind. Direct them to an online version of the textbook. And use a variety of web resources (such as Geogebra. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. You are com...

Chronicles of a fourth year math teacher. Fears, epic fails, and triumphs. Math/Ramadan Snapshots: My Ramadan Lenscape. June 6, 2016. Ramadan officially started yesterday at sunset. For the next 30 days or so a billion plus Muslims will be observing the holy month by fasting. It’s a time of spiritual growth, extending generosity, and connecting with God. Observing Ramadan looks very different across the Muslim world since it’s a VERY. Because … Duh! Mubarak to all of our friends! Or do you maybe have som...

https://mathontheedge.wordpress.com/2016/12/04/shame

December 4, 2016. December 5, 2016. Math on the edge. When I woke up this morning, I went right to Twitter to see if I could find video footage of the keynotes from the California Math Conference. I watched Fawn Nguyen and I jotted down the things that made me think, “Yes! I want to do that! How do I give her the power? While we were exploring, another colleague approached me. 8220;How long have you have been a math coach? 8220;5 years.”. 8220;What grades do you coach? 8220;Well I started as a 3-8 math c...

Doing it the hard way | Reflections on teaching

https://heathersugrue.wordpress.com/2016/09/17/doing-it-the-hard-way

From the perspective of a high school math teacher. Doing it the hard way. As the first full week of classes came to an end yesterday, I was working with my Honors Geometry class on Friday afternoon. We had all worked this problem for homework:. A second group did something similar, but chose to place point R at 0 and point S at 8. They also reached the same solution, that WZ=3x, but all of the points they placed on their “ruler” were at integer values. Are all of the solutions reasonable? It didn’...

Observations | Reflections on teaching

https://heathersugrue.wordpress.com/2016/11/21/observations

From the perspective of a high school math teacher. Overall, these visits have been really enjoyable. Visiting the art class was probably my favorite, but I did realize that even just spending 20 minutes in a class gives me plenty to observe and a lot to think about. Here are a few of my takeaways after being in others’ classes:. It’s invigorating and refreshing to watch my colleagues teach, regardless of discipline. Returning student work promptly is always a good idea, and will always be appreciated.

Tutoring | Reflections on teaching

https://heathersugrue.wordpress.com/2016/11/28/tutoring

From the perspective of a high school math teacher. Joanne is taking what is essentially an Algebra I class at her college. She has attempted three other math classes and has either dropped them or failed them, and she needs to pass one math class to earn her degree. Her advisor suggested she try a self-paced course, which happened to also be computer-based, using the ALEKS program. Our assumptions can be risky, and mostly they are risky for the students in our classroom. All of these ideas coalesced in ...

@HeatherSugrue | Reflections on teaching

https://heathersugrue.wordpress.com/author/heathersugruemiltonedu

From the perspective of a high school math teacher. I have three classes with very different personalities. One small group is extremely quiet. What changes do I need to make so I hear their voices more often, and they get what they need out of class? Another group is boisterous, eager to jump up and do problems at the board. However, two or three students sometimes get left out of that vibe. How can I reclaim some class time to make sure everyone has their “moment”? TABS and Time to Reflect. Joanne is t...
