GardenRambler: Chickens are in the coop and acting very grown up
http://gardenrambler.blogspot.com/2015/06/chickens-are-in-coop-and-acting-very.html
Tuesday, June 23, 2015. Chickens are in the coop and acting very grown up. Well, we found out, for sure, today that Dot is Nottadot (or Donny, we haven't landed on a good name that isn't female). He crowed for me this morning! Patches, our new barn cat checking out the pop door on the coop. Their first trip out the pop door and down the ramp to the run. Donny and three girls checking out the real ground. Thistle is in the background with his tail in the air). Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Chickens ...

GardenRambler: New neighbors
http://gardenrambler.blogspot.com/2015/06/new-neighbors.html
Tuesday, June 23, 2015. Last weekend the alpacas were fascinated by the happenings in the pasture next door. The boys getting a close look into the neighboring pasture. They saw five little goats! Our new neighbors had their goats delivered on Sunday. There is one pregnant Nubian doe, one black pygmy doe with her one-week-old baby, and two white pygmy wethers. The objects of their curiosity. I had to get a closeup of the little baby. She's so tiny it's hard to see her in the grass. November at the Farm.

GardenRambler: October 2014
http://gardenrambler.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
Tuesday, October 21, 2014. How many alpacas fit in a cargo van? Ever wonder how to move alpacas? I found an answer: in a cargo van. We moved our guys to the farm last weekend in my step-dad Pete's cargo van - all SEVEN! All 7 of the boys are "cushing" as we drive on I-70 through Kansas City. My co-pilot took a selfie :-). Jeremy and the alpacas in the van driving through the city. A big THANK YOU goes out to Pete for loaning us the van and following us back to the farm in the truck! Which, of course, tur...

GardenRambler: Bad storm - tested our erosion control
http://gardenrambler.blogspot.com/2015/07/bad-storm-tested-our-erosion-control.html
Sunday, July 12, 2015. Bad storm - tested our erosion control. It was a relative success, but the small terraces I built were not adequate. Early last week we had tornado sirens, high winds and 5 inches of rain - all in a few hours! Jeremy and I watched literal waterfalls pour over the retaining wall near the front porch. And the "dry" creek bed was a fast-running, full creek. Below the blueberry hedge the water washed dirt all the way across our gravel drive. They have a tremendous taproot. So this ...

GardenRambler: April 2015
http://gardenrambler.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html
Wednesday, April 22, 2015. New trees, new pasture, rain and a 4-wheel drive lesson. Last weekend I was excited to bring home 3 native trees/shrubs from the Missouri Prairie Foundation annual sale at the City Market in Kansas City. The sale is continuing this coming weekend, too. But I am doing everything I can to control the urge to buy more until I've planted what I already have. Ozark Witch Hazel waiting to be planted. Unfortunately, I needed a lesson in patience (and the limits of 4-wheel drive in mud).

GardenRambler: Update on the bee hives
http://gardenrambler.blogspot.com/2015/06/update-on-bee-hives.html
Tuesday, June 23, 2015. Update on the bee hives. I've been very happy that I started with 2 hives as everyone suggested. Being a new beekeeper, there is really no other way to understand what a strong hive and a weak hive look like. I have one of each. And the difference between them is huge. Jeremy helped me make the switch one sunny day a few weeks ago. And it did help the population of the original East Hive. But eventually it dwindled again. But John at Wolf Creek convinced me that something else mig...

GardenRambler: September 2014
http://gardenrambler.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html
Monday, September 29, 2014. Brent and I worked yesterday on the barn for the alpacas. The dirt work was scheduled for last week, but will be done tomorrow (Tuesday) due to rain delays. Brent has finished his work on the flooring in the house and decided to help me yesterday. We also got a hand from my step-dad, Pete. Things go a lot faster with those guys around! We did a lot to prepare the barn for its new floor. Pete and Brent cutting the tops of poles. Here's a shot near the end of the day. Rick and h...
