There have been other theaters on the boardwalk in Ocean City. Here are some of them. Darby's Silent Theatre was located in the Simm's building at Moorlyn Terrace. Poster is for Kidnapping Father. Faunce's Theatre, 1922. Between 9th and 10th street later became the Colonial and then the Plaza Theatre before burning in 1927. 1915 I'm told the theater was operated by Roscoe Faunce. When I worked on the boardwalk his son was still managing some of the Shriver Theaters. Not sure, but I think it was 1936.

The Press of Atlantic City. SCHILLING, HELEN S. 96, of Rydal, PA and Ocean City, died Tuesday, December 1, 1998 at her home in Ocean City. Arrangements by Helweg Funeral Services, Inc., Jenkintown, PA. I knew Mrs. Schilling when she was in her 80's. She was not very tall, had very thick round glasses, and wore the heaviest wool coat in the summer. When she would stop by the theatre, she would have a few simple, innocent questions. Following the 1937 fire that destroyed the original Strand Theatre, William Shriver decided he would rebuild his theatre as the finest boardwalk theatre on the boardwalk. Using the architect Armand Carroll of Philadelphia, he designed a new theatre for the premium location at 9th and Boardwalk. The corner had previously been home to a carousel. Burned down in the fall of 1937. The new theatre opened for business on a hot, sunny August 11, 1938. Portraits of Hollywood stars were set into the southern wall.

These are just a few of my favorite pictures. I think this one is pretty cool because it is the only image I've ever seen that shows the inside of the Moorlyn when it was Moore's Bowling Casino before 1922. The boardwalk, while not the first one built, was still a pretty new thing and I'm sure this was a favorite place for those early boardwalk visitors. In this picture. I like this one because it shows the Village Theatre when is was still Doughty's Pier. Notice that the ocean washes up underneath.

Has probably the most interesting history. It was built as a pier near 8th Street sometime after 1910. Standing high up on pilings, above the water's edge, the theatre presented plays, vaudeville acts and silent movies. Doughty's Pier. As it was known, had rows of windows on each side to let the ocean breeze through. Benches offered simple seating for the crowds. Along with a pavilion. And a walkway to the water's edge. The Doughty Building. Of the building, overlooking the Atlantic, each night and talk.
