Spatial Statistical Stream Network Workshop. I have just attended a workshop at Washington State University on spatial statistical network modeling. It is obvious that stream segments should be considered not independently but as part of a bigger network. In this workshop, we learned how to use tools in ArcGIS and R to accommodate this spatial connectivity when modeling various features of a hydrologic network. This will certainly be useful for my future analyses! Peterson et al. 2012.

Young Naturalists’ Society. I have just come back from two weeks of field work in Chubut province, Argentina. My collaborator (Luciano Avila) and I were based out of Puerto Madryn, but we made daily excursions eastward to sample a putative hybrid zone involving. These samples will be used to examine comparative genomic divergences between 5 species of. Besides catching lizards, I saw many other cool animals including flamingos, penguins, vipers, southern sea lions, and elephant seals!

Young Naturalists’ Society. Freshly picked Cascade hops! Hip to the Hop. Last week, my friend Charles told me about a sweet opportunity: picking hops at someone's house in exchange for beer! This feller, Rick, has had these Cascade hops growing on his property for 8 years, and there are A LOT of them! They now grow to 20' tall, and he barely has to water them at all over the course of the growing season. Oh Washington, another reason why I love thee. Barleywine wort from the first and second runnings.

Young Naturalists’ Society. A King’s Fall. Fall 2014 has been off to a great fungal start! Substantive rains in middle-late August gave the mountains the moisture they needed to pop those primordia out of the ground. I went to last year's king bolete (Boletus edulis) patch in early September, but we only found a single button. Ten days later, the same exact date that we had great success last year, porcini were abound! I know what you're thinking: all mushrooms are brown and boring. False!
