https://mynaturejournal.wordpress.com/2016/04/17/badgers-buzzards-and-ducks-oh-my
A nature journal…by a scientist. Highlighting nature with a scientific slant. Badgers, buzzards and ducks, oh my! So today was a really good day for spotting interesting and fun species. We went for a walk around some local woods that are surrounded by open fields and have a small manmade pond nearby. First up is the European badger (. One of many snuffle holes with traces of pad prints. Yup, black and white! More info on identifying badgers can be found here. Second spotting was probably a bit more typi...

A nature journal…by a scientist. Highlighting nature with a scientific slant. I started this blog because I wanted to write about all of the exciting and different wildlife that I regularly see in my local area (Cambridgeshire, UK) and on my travels around the UK and beyond. Some of this blog will be about exciting new things that I’ve seen, fun new facts that I’ve learned, or even just interesting stuff that I’ve read. So enjoy and engage! Leave a Reply Cancel reply. A nature journal…by a scientist. Highlighting nature with a scientific slant. Common blackbird (Turdus merula). I love blackbirds. They are lovely little birds which I see regularly in my garden as well as all around the town where I work. In fact, I can hear one singing from a tree nearby right now. They are a pretty iconic British bird and thankfully are also a relatively common sight. According to the RSPB. March 15, 2016. March 15, 2016. 2 thoughts on “ Common blackbird (Turdus merula). A nature journal…by a scientist. Highlighting nature with a scientific slant. I was really lucky to see a kingfisher today. I’ve only ever seen one once before as it was diving to feed. This one was spotted by the other half and we only then realised that we had been listening to it calling for a good five minutes before realising what was making the noise. Here’s a lovely video from the RSPB of one in action. April 1, 2016. April 1, 2016. Common blackbird (Turdus merula). Leave a Reply Cancel reply.

Stumbling along a Druid path. Newer posts →. Love (still) trumps hate. January 22, 2017. 8220;There’s a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in”. This weekend saw anger, hatred, ego and fear elevated to the most powerful position in the world. This week also saw threatening storm clouds at home, warning of hard and dark times to come. This is what democracy looks like. I was privileged to be able to attend two small rallies in my home town this week, one to call for a strong EU and a halt to th...

Stumbling along a Druid path. Lessons from a Gorse bush. Happy New Year →. December 15, 2016. Sitting at my table at home, I am frequently delighted to hear a sudden, sharp laughter coming from the garden. Looking out, I see a visitor, clad in green with a red hat looking back at me. A gnome? Nope, it’s a resident Green Woodpecker who has taken to using the lawn as a food larder. The European Green Woodpecker (. Perhaps surprisingly for a woodpecker, the Green Woodpecker rarely pecks at trees, preferring...

Stumbling along a Druid path. Making mead (and bread) →. August 14, 2016. Gorse, or Onn. My Ogham few from Druid Camp. At Druid Camp, everyone at the opening ritual was given a gift of an Ogham. Few, cut from the wood of one of the Ogham trees and inscribed with its corresponding symbol. My wife received oak, and I was instantly jealous. I mean, come on…we’re Druids, who wouldn’t want to get oak, right? I, on the other hand, got gorse. In the Ogham, Gorse is called. John Michael Greer refers to gorse as ...

Stumbling along a Druid path. A visit to Avalon. Green Woodpecker →. Lessons from a Gorse bush. December 14, 2016. Ever since I got given the Gorse Ogham few. At Druid Camp in August, this spiky little shrub has been teaching me lessons. Is not exactly the stately, ancient, tall tree of the forest one might first associate with Druids and with wisdom: that title surely goes to the mighty Oak. But, it is not without insight. Gorse can be used in healing. For 2017, let’s try to be more like this hard...

Stumbling along a Druid path. January 1, 2017. After taking a break from blogging over the festive season, I wanted to check back in at the start of this new year. 2016 has been a difficult one, both globally and personally, and it looks like the world in 2017 will continue to be uncertain and challenging. Much of what we love will be under attack from politicians and big business, and there will be some tough times ahead, of that I’m sure. In other news, the book I contributed an essay to,. All reach th...

Lessons from Nature
Monday, March 23, 2015. Choosing Your Nesting Site. Between Sunday morning and this morning, a Carolina Wren. As we sat drinking coffee in our sunroom, we watched as a little wren came back; beak full of soft material to add to its growing nest. My heart sank. The poor little bird looked so confused. I mimicked its little voice, "Wha, wha, where is my nest? I knew it was here. I'm not cazy. I left it right here! We left it right here. I know we did. We're not crazy, are we? Wren searching for its nest.
