A new learning landscape. Searching through an old computer back up recently, I found this foreword I wrote for a colleague’s book over ten years ago, back in 2004. I found that I still felt I agreed with these earlier views, and that it might be useful to others:. So far so good it seems that there is already an impressive case for doing mathematics, practically, with a computer. But sadly, the potential identified here is often missing why? A new learning landscape. I have been working for the HoTEL EU Support Action. Recently at Brunel University. And I was asked to produced a report on learning theories – a struggle, since there seem to be so many ‘isms’ and often I come across what seems to be the same theory, but from a different disciplinary or professional context. A new learning landscape. A response to Secret Teacher’s breakdown. Dear Secret Teacher,. I found your report in the Guardian. Moving and important – recognition and acceptance that we have a problem is vital to recovery and I wish you well with yours. I, like you, subscribe to Hargreaves’ “unconditional positive regard”. And I am an unreformed “new romantic”, tempered with a little “lion tamer” and “entertainer” when needed! Nevertheless, I was troubled by this paragraph:. PS Thanks to @Yorks Bunny.

A new learning landscape. A program to compute the factorial of a number using Blockly. I’m sure many of my readers will know what I mean, but just in case, I am talking about the visual programming languages. For programming computers which use blocks that plug together like a jigsaw to express algorithms. Examples include StarLogo. These are widely used to introduce programming for the following reasons:. It is impossible to make syntax errors such as incorrect spelling, conjunction or punctuation;.

Fear and the Internet. November 16, 2012 1 Comment. Most departments have got a set of 30 iPod Touches and there’s now a suite of iPads we have all this technology, but we’ve got a policy where we’re not allowed to use anything that might allow a combination of a camera and the Internet together. So in reality it’s all useless.’. Similarly, Jane (secondary school teacher) discussed problems with her school’s ICT policies:. What’s wrong with being alone? October 15, 2012.
