Calm bees and a swarm | A hive of activity

Just another WordPress.com site. A hive of activity. Calm bees and a swarm. Calm bees and a swarm. Wendy Oakley here with an update on the BBC hive at Wimpole Home Farm in south Cambridgeshire. Pauline Aslin, my Bee Buddy, and I visited the hive again on 19 July. All well and the bees had started to move into the recently fitted super. Pauline replaced one very old frame of stores with a foundation frame. I held the bottom of a tall ladder whilst Pauline went up with some loppers. She had to cut seve...
The taste of honey | A hive of activity

Just another WordPress.com site. A hive of activity. Calm bees and a swarm. The taste of honey. Lucy from Rowallane reporting in with lots of exciting discoveries. The hive was opened and the super removed (where the honey’s stored). Enlisting the help of a bee buddy I took advantage of his utility room which has everything needed to extract the honey. Each frame was removed from the super and uncapped using an uncapping knife. When the honey was spun out the smell was fantastic! The flavour was absolute...

Just another WordPress.com site. A hive of activity. Calm bees and a swarm. Calm bees and a swarm at Wimpole, Cambridgeshire. Whilst Pauline and I were looking at the hive, we were informed that the bees from Wimpole’s observation hive were swarming. This had been expected. They were settling on an apple tree in the picnic area and some of this was quickly roped off as visitors were looking for places to settle for lunch. Queen bee from the Lizard hive has died. Sweet as honey →. Enter your comment here.

Just another WordPress.com site. A hive of activity. Calm bees and a swarm. The National Trust and BBC Local Radio are encouraging people to ‘Bee Part of It! This summer through a campaign to help the honey bee. In the UK alone, the number of honey bee colonies halved between 1985-2005 due to changes in land use, the varroa mite (which sucks the bee’s blood and spreads disease), and cold wet summers. Calling Last Orders
It is with regret that we have had to close the National Trust Beer Club. We have been operating the Beer Club since September 2013 and in the 20 months since the launch, the Club has not gained a sufficient number of members in order to make it a viable operation in the long term. We have, therefore, taken the painful decision to call last orders. All enquiries should now be directed to greg@northpoint.co.uk. National Trust Beer Club.

Just another WordPress.com site. A hive of activity. Calm bees and a swarm. Preparations for overwintering at Wimpole. Wendy Oakley reporting on the BBC hive at Wimpole Home Farm in south Cambridgeshire. Over the last few weeks, Pauline Aslin, my Bee Buddy, has started on preparations to create good conditions in the BBC hive for our bees to overwinter. The colony is small and docile. Just the brood box is in place with room for more stores. We will not be harvesting any honey this season. One of the rea...
