North Downs and beyond: A fly worth looking at

http://northdownsandbeyond.blogspot.com/2015/08/a-fly-worth-looking-at.html

Uber patch bird list. 2016 Inner Uber birds. Sunday, 9 August 2015. A fly worth looking at. I tend to leave flies alone. A lot of them look similar, need keys to identify them and give me the impression of being hard to do. Up until now there has been just one species of fly that gave me a bolt of excitement, and that was Tachina grossa. A brute of a beast. Today, that was joined by another, when this Nowickia ferox. Was discovered at Headley Heath, Surrey. My assumption that this is, in fact, ferox.

North Downs and beyond: Small Mottled Willow

http://northdownsandbeyond.blogspot.com/2015/08/small-mottled-willow.html

Uber patch bird list. 2016 Inner Uber birds. Saturday, 8 August 2015. This Small Mottled Willow was a nice surprise in the garden MV last night - well, when I say 'surprise', it wasn't really, as there have been a fair few around this year. A primary migrant, this is my second site record, following on from one trapped on 10th October 1995. Having just read Billy Dykes latest blog post, he mentions adding Pammene aurita. To his garden list. Snap! 8 August 2015 at 13:59. 8 August 2015 at 19:15. Canons Far...

North Downs and beyond: 395 or 396, but who cares?

http://northdownsandbeyond.blogspot.com/2015/08/395-or-396-but-who-cares.html

Uber patch bird list. 2016 Inner Uber birds. Friday, 7 August 2015. 395 or 396, but who cares? This morning's moth trap contents were a strange affair - it was quite a small total but did include a number of scarce species for the site, the fourth Barred Rivulet (left), the seventh Peacock Moth and the 10th Black Arches. 7 August 2015 at 13:55. Steve - just to confuse you a bit more, your Small Seraphim has markings and a wing shape better suited to Barred Rivulet for me. 7 August 2015 at 14:24. Yes Jon,...

North Downs and beyond: DBO moths

http://northdownsandbeyond.blogspot.com/2015/05/dbo-moths.html

Uber patch bird list. 2016 Inner Uber birds. Wednesday, 20 May 2015. The Dungeness Bird Observatory moth trap was not exactly leaping last week, but compared to some of the totals that nearby recorders were obtaining, it wasn't really all that bad. In fact, this particular moth was notable indeed:. What was common were these:. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Sightings - Saturday 20th August 2016. The nights are drawing out. Literate herring, this way. At last, a bird! Time to go birding again? Hen Ha...

North Downs and beyond: WWBTs and Hobbys

http://northdownsandbeyond.blogspot.com/2015/05/wwbts-and-hobbys.html

Uber patch bird list. 2016 Inner Uber birds. Tuesday, 19 May 2015. At Dungeness last Thursday the wind swung easterly and the rain set in. The local birders predicted a good bird and they were right - well, almost right, as none of them had actually predicted that there would be TWO good birds. The RSPB reserve was the chosen stop off point for these two White-winged Black Terns (above) and it was Martin Casemore (click here for proper images). Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). At last, a bird! The Tra...

Downland Views: October 2012

http://downlandviews.blogspot.com/2012_10_01_archive.html

Musings of life in an area of chalk downland with its abundance of wildlife but only a few miles from London. Sunday, 14 October 2012. I always find Autumn to be a peaceful time. There is a sense of things settling down for a well earned rest and, to be honest, I would like to join them as I feel tired. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Biggin Hill, United Kingdom. Downland Views: December 2013

http://downlandviews.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html

Musings of life in an area of chalk downland with its abundance of wildlife but only a few miles from London. Sunday, 8 December 2013. Last Post (for a while). I have legitimately been able to forget the housework and go off exploring the countryside as the doctor said walking would strengthen my knee and help with its recovery following the op. It has worked.I am now pain free! I have also visited the various parts of Saltbox S.S.S.I. The area we overlook from our bungalow is very disapp...As did the As...

Downland Views: I Blame the Weather

http://downlandviews.blogspot.com/2013/08/i-blame-weather.html

Musings of life in an area of chalk downland with its abundance of wildlife but only a few miles from London. Sunday, 4 August 2013. I Blame the Weather. Thankfully when we took my mother to visit a Lavender farm that is not too far away there were plenty of bees (although hardly any honey bees). I therefore decided that this year I would brush cut and rake the area of the field directly behind us before these plants went to seed. Here is a picture showing Superman Sean shearing a shaggy sheep in shimmer...

Of moths and man (and other stuff): May 2015

http://mothsandman.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html

Of moths and man (and other stuff). Saturday, May 30, 2015. Garden odds and ends. As tomorrow is looking a little iffy on the weather front, I had a day catching up with gardening chores. Most of the day was spent mowing with occasionally pauses to pot insects that I came across. The pick of today's bunch were a Helophilus pendulus. Hoverfly, a Scorpionfly Panorpa. Spp and a Red-headed Cardinal Beetle Pyrochroa serraticornis. Friday, May 29, 2015. Trapping on the whole has still been pretty quite. We arr...

Of moths and man (and other stuff): Recent offerings

http://mothsandman.blogspot.com/2015/07/recent-offerings.html

Of moths and man (and other stuff). Sunday, July 26, 2015. With the abysmal weather of the last few days and a mounting workload before summer holidays next week, natural history has taken a bit of a sideline. I have had the moth trap a couple of times which has resulted in three new species for the garden. Firstly, Lunar-spotted Pinion Cosmia pyralina,. Not one that was on my radar and threw me at first when i turned over the egg box. Not unsusal locally though apparently. View my complete profile.

Of moths and man (and other stuff): January 2015

http://mothsandman.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

Of moths and man (and other stuff). Saturday, January 24, 2015. My first woodlouse.or is it? Well I say my first woodlouse, but in all honesty I've seen hundreds of the things it's just that I've never got round to trying to identifying one to species. So while laying a hedge and moving some bricks in the garden today I decided to pot a couple I found and sat down with a copy of the AIDGAP Woodlice book by Hopkins. Unsurprisingly, it keyed out as the rather common Oniscus asellus. Sunday, January 18, 2015.

Uber patch bird list. Wednesday, 11 April 2018. The shingle is beckoning. I haven't crunched the shingle since late October. It's about time I put that right. A visit next week seems to be on the cards. My recent April visits have been a little disappointing, with very few migrants, chill winds and much frantic bush-bashing, although the flora is always there to admire and Andrena vega.
