Posted by Jean Gendreau. May 5, 2009. We have bugs — bees, flies, even butterflies. The birds are back, and we wake up to twittering. This morning at 5 the loons’ ghostly calls bounced back and forth in the bay. Ducks quack overhead, we hear a motor far out on the lake as fishermen get ready for Saturday, and Peter buzzes us in his ultralight, waving happily. K has been sick for weeks and is slowly getting his strength back. How horrible it is to watch a huge, strong man nap! Leave a Reply Cancel reply.

The train stops for only a few minutes at Kiratpur’s tiny station. Mohsin and I stand ready at the door, our bags at our feet. He jumps out, and then reaches up for me. I grew up in a city, always hearing the sound of cars and other people moms yelling at their kids, men walking by outside, a garbage truck, an ambulance. Here there is silence. Sometimes birds twitter, sometimes wolves howl, sometimes I can just barely hear a snowmobile on a trail. Every now and then a woodpecker taps. During hunting season I hear gunshots.

35 years ago today…. Several of you reading this blog have asked me to re-print this piece. I wrote it when I was 23. It was published in Redbook magazine and in the book Redbook’s The Young Mothers. The IUD it mentions was recalled soon after this happened, and the husband mentioned died of alcoholism in 1999.
