Not Quite Scilly

Tuesday, 10 January 2017. Murder on the Common. Anyway, all I can say is that over the years I have shared this episode with very few, because I'm not proud of it, and yet now for some reason I am doing quite the opposite. The story begins with a green parrot in the tree outside my window in early May. I could identify many birds, but had no idea what this was. Surely an aviary escape? As well as what else I could expect to see in and around the grounds of our hall of residence. Roding Woodcock. In that ...

Not Quite Scilly: Two shades of Twitter

http://notquitescilly2.blogspot.com/2017/01/two-shades-of-twitter.html

Sunday, 8 January 2017. Two shades of Twitter. Mrs NQS and I have just had a couple of days away at Lyndhurst in the New Forest on one of those short break hotel deals. If the weather was okay we wanted to try for Great Grey Shrike. Both of which we haven't seen for many years. It struck me that Hawfinch. Sites and one for GGS. In the event we scored at the first Hawfinch. At all. A single Dartford Warbler. Was some compensation I suppose. At last knockings we tried a Hawfinch. However, Twitter isn't all...

Not Quite Scilly: This and That

http://notquitescilly2.blogspot.com/2017/01/this-and-that.html

Friday, 6 January 2017. Late on Wednesday afternoon I added Water Rail. I thought it might be interesting to post photos of the two jacks I caught the other day. They are both about 4lb, but notice how different their markings are. I think I'm right in saying that they more or less retain the same patterns as they grow. This is just one of the reasons that they're such great fish to catch; they're simply stunning. Time before I get back in the saddle. I don't often get ill and I'm not very good at it.

Not Quite Scilly: February 2016

http://notquitescilly2.blogspot.com/2016_02_01_archive.html

Friday, 19 February 2016. Brightening Up a Dull Day. As I type it is raining again, a thin drizzle. The sky is grey, visibility is poor. All is gloom. Beautiful is to get out and cycle it. I shan't do that just now, but will type a few words instead. Who doesn't like a nice view? This photo wasn't taken to illustrate the view particularly, but even so there's Portland on the left, and a sliver of Chesil Beach and the Fleet on the right - maybe at Abbotsbury? Basically I ride up here, stop, go Wow! That's...

Not Quite Scilly: December 2015

http://notquitescilly2.blogspot.com/2015_12_01_archive.html

Thursday, 31 December 2015. The End of Year Post. I'm glad not to be outdoors right now. Squally rain is lashing against our little conservatory like a breaking wave. 2015 has played itself out in this manner for the last several weeks and, along with everyone else, I am ready for a new tune please. Right, that's enough of that. In the 'Standing Stone Field', maybe you wondered why it was called that? After all, there were quite clearly no standing stones present. Well, here's why. Or, technically, trike.

Colyton Wildlife: Black Hole Marsh gets exciting!

http://timwhitewildlife.blogspot.com/2015/08/black-hole-marsh-gets-exciting.html

Thursday, 13 August 2015. Black Hole Marsh gets exciting! Wednesday saw a great increase in numbers of waders on the reserve. Afternoon Ringed Plover number was 4, but there were at least 21 there by Sunset. Lots of pics to come (and I'll soon have time to do it due to redundancy). I also found a Ruff today; this is the first patch Ruff of the Autumn. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. KNOT another wader post. Better LITTLE STINT and CURLEW SAND pics. Wednesday, 26 August 2015. KNOT another wader post. I thought I'd join the bandwagon of having a slight pun in the post title - I caught up with the Knot on Black Hole Marsh this evening. A fairly scarce bird on patch; this was only my fourth. Here's a couple of snaps:. Tuesday, 25 August 2015. Better LITTLE STINT and CURLEW SAND pics. Black Hole Marsh was a bit disappointing this morning! CURLEW SANDPIPERS join in the party. Sunday, 23 August 2015. INCREDIBLE number of WOOD SANDS at Black Hole Marsh.

Colyton Wildlife: Comma Butterfly Pic

Friday, 17 July 2015. A pic of a butterfly to liven up this page! There's a lot going on for me at the moment, hence the lack of activity here; sorry about that! I will rectify this very soon. It's not easy to take aesthetically pleasing photos of butterflies, but I quite like this one. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. Colyton Wildlife: October 2014

http://timwhitewildlife.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

Friday, 31 October 2014. RED-BREASTED FLYCATCHER - Lifer on patch. Sunday, 26 October 2014. GREY PHALAROPE - Brilliantly Obliging. I haven't been able to spend much time out with the camera this month due to masses of work, but with a couple hours free this afternoon I thought I'd try for the Budleigh Salterton / River Otter Grey Phalarope which has been present for almost a week now. It was actually a lifer for me (yes, really) so to get such close views of this most tolerant bird was great!

Galley Head Birding: November 2014

http://galleyheadbirding.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

Tuesday, November 18, 2014. Well, the autumn fizzled out without really ever getting started hereabouts! Haven't really been out and apart from a well-timed whooper swan. From the jax, and a goldeneye. On the lake, there's been nothing in the way of year tick action either ( 126. So it was with great excitement and anticipation that I found myself on the shores of Lough Gill, County Kerry yesterday for a spot of dirty twitching. And the target? Ireland's 4th ever american coot. The male lesser scaup.

Galley Head Birding: October 2014

http://galleyheadbirding.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

Tuesday, October 14, 2014. Blimey - a month since I've been on here! Apart from a rather bird-packed few days on Shetland, I've seen very little. Not that I haven't been out slogging round Galley most days, its just there's been very little to see. Thus far into October I've managed siskin. For the year at Galley. A bit pants. Until today. With the wind finally in the south-east, I was quietly optimistic that there'd be a bit more around today. And so it proved, with a fine yellow-browed warbler.

Charmouth Birding: April 2016

http://charmouthbirding.blogspot.com/2016_04_01_archive.html

A photographic record of birds in and around Charmouth, Dorset, UK. Friday, 29 April 2016. It proved too good to miss so I drove down to near Musbury this afternoon. What a beauty the bird was, feeding energetically in the grass alongside a pond and lit up by brilliant sunshine. Surprisingly insconspicuous at distance and initially keeping low to the grass . Here's a short video of the Hoopoe feeding in the soft ground near one of the ponds. Another brilliant local bird for April. Monday, 25 April 2016.

Colyton Wildlife: March 2015

http://timwhitewildlife.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html

Friday, 27 March 2015. Solar Eclipse and Canada Geese. I shot this at F/45 as I heard the Geese approach and therefore had a few seconds to set up the shot. I've messed around with contrast and added vignette to liven up the pic but it has not been manipulated otherwise. There're two more shots in the sequence which I'll hopefully upload soon. The 'flock' was 6 Canada Geese, I snapped a pic of the group on my other camera before they reached the Sun/Moon. Wednesday, 25 March 2015. Saturday, 21 March 2015.

Reluctant to finally leave across the Channel and with plenty of food available on the wing, 00's are still hawking for insects above the undercliff on Stonebarrow Hill. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).
