My thoughts on education, especially school meals. The fight to save Universal Infant Free school meals is the wrong fight to have. September 22, 2015. Cuts, cuts and more cuts. Like it or not the education budget is being cut. Once you get your head round that as a fact, your perspectives should change. Where will the education cuts fall. So the dfe have the unenviable job of prioritising where they will find savings from a fairly restricted list, all of whom have strong cases for continued levels of fu...

My thoughts on education, especially school meals. The Conservative conference and its impact of school food (but dont mention UIFSM). October 9, 2015. At the recent Conservative party conference (where talk of school meals was conspicuously absent as though it was banned for some reason. Two announcements from the podium caught my attention because of their indirect impact on school meals. First off was David Cameron’s “all schools will become academies”. Pronouncement (yes, I know he said it before.

More haste: more chaos! | Ramblings of a Teacher
https://michaelt1979.wordpress.com/2014/02/20/more-haste-more-chaos
Ramblings of a Teacher. With not even a hint of cohesion between posts. More haste: more chaos! I am finding it increasingly frustrating lately that so much of what is being changed in education at the moment is being rushed. It is too easy, sometimes, to complain about the politicisation of education, but these matters cannot be ignored: the haste with which policies are being changed is leading to confusion and disruption in the education system beyond that which is necessary. Alongside the curriculum ...

Kirsty's education / research blog. Developing survey questions: “I read for pleasure at home”. We’re currently working on updating and developing survey items for different age groups for our research into university access interventions. We’re arranging a piloting session with a local school, where we’ll test out some survey items on our target age group to see whether they interpret them in the way we intend. One of the particular questions we’ve been discussing is. But the main reason I picked 4, whi...

Universal Free School Meals – a good policy? | Imperfect Research
https://imperfectresearch.wordpress.com/2014/09/02/universal-free-school-meals-closing-the-gap
Kirsty's education / research blog. Universal Free School Meals – a good policy? This morning I tweeted my disagreement with the new free school meals policy (that school lunches are free for all children in reception, Year 1 and Year 2). I thought it unfair that school meals are now free for children whose parents can easily afford to pay – especially when harsh and disproportionately allocated budget cuts. Then I read the report on the free school meals pilot. A stepped wedge randomised roll-out, where...

Keeping It Real: Diary of a Not Very Indian Girl
Why 'Keeping It Real'? Why 'Not Very Indian'? Sunday, 16 August 2015. Songs That Make You Think 'You're Kidding, Right? So catchy, semi-pathetic- 'Where can I find a woman like that? I wish that I had Jessie's girl.' But then you listen more closely, and you think 'How old is this guy? That sounds really immature.'. Jessie is a friend,. Yeah, I know he's been a good friend of mine. But lately something's changed. It ain't hard to define. Jessie's got himself a girl and I want to make her mine. To turn ar...

not very much to you | how much is that?
Not very much to you. Worth emphasis, again, is that the public discomfort with this isn’t envy, it’s about the inequity. Or, as Elizabeth Warren put it plainly:. It’s not about envy it’s about equity. This isn’t hard stuff. And it really isn’t fair that the system is rigged to favor the people with that kind of money. But as more information is uncovered from the (completely inadequate) tax record release, it could get more interesting. Quotation can be found here. Speaking of inequity, in a nutshell:.
