DAY 8, SATURDAY. DRIVE FROM HOKIANGA TO WHANGAMATA. Laquo; Previous Page. Click an image to enlarge it. Drive from Hokianga to Whangamata (411 kms): route map. Accommodation: Brenton Lodge, Whangamata. Today was a day of driving. Leaving Omapere at 9am, we arrived at Whangamata at about 4pm, having only stopped briefly for lunch. Phew! Oh, and strong winds again! Honeycomb for David and White Strawberry Crumble for Emma - delicious!

DAY 4, TUESDAY. Laquo; Previous Page. Click an image to enlarge it. Accommodation: Rydges Auckland Hotel. A very turbulent flight over south east Asia finally settled down and we ended up with a 90mph tailwind pushing us on to Auckland. We had a short wait in the hotel reception before we could get access to the room, and once we had dumped the bags, off we went for a walk around downtown Auckland. An early dinner at a local Thai restauant and we were in bed by 9pm.

From Invercargill to Auckland, following Scotland (and Dan Carter) all the way. Tuesday, 1 November 2011. 8 hours in a plane and you arrive in a different world where there are more people crammed onto a little island than in the whole of NZ. Everywhere is serious high rise although some are more glitzy than others. We really noticed changes from when we were here 16 years ago with even taller sky scrapers, a new airport on flattened land and a complete loss of British colonial history. 72 Hours in Oz.
