Wednesday, April 14, 2010. Me Talk Pretty One Day. Having been born and raised in New York City, I have been around a lot of different cultures and ethnicity's all my life. For most of my life, I can remember meeting people on the street who did not speak English and I always wondered to myself “what’s so hard about the English language? Monday, April 12, 2010. Or did she whack a man with her umbrella? 8221; “Would that really be practical? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Talking Hands" by Margalit Fox.

kawser in introduction to language: language at stake
http://kawserslanguage.blogspot.com/2010/04/language-at-stake.html
Wednesday, April 28, 2010. Language is the closest relative any human being could possibly have. Nobody can pass a day without saying a word or hearing a word. Even little babies have their own language no matter how funny it sounds. So far linguists have found out that are having more than 60000 languages throughout the world.Does not it feel amazing to hear that? How many languages can we think of? Maybe there are several hundred. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Kawser in introduction to language.

Monday, May 24, 2010. In an astonishing narrative of the journey to a remote village in Israel close to the city of Haifa, a team of researchers begin to document an isolated language “AL-SAYYID”. Talking Hands by Margalit Fox is a narrative of exploration of a linguistic team. The language that they were going to research was a very rare type of sign language that was never recorded. We have learned various things throughout the semester, one of which was from the documentaries that we have watched whic...

Sunday, May 23, 2010. 1 External Reality: slide 53. People acquire a set of words to speak about things that exist around them, which can vary depending on the language spoken. 2 Career Man: slide 80. Career man relates to the slide on language and gender because "career man" doesn't exist in English whereas career woman does. In our society men are expected to have a career and/or work so there is no need to have a word to specify that. 3 Piraha in Brazil: slide 56. 4 Social gender: slide 78. It's funny...

el bloc d'en Raul: The Linguists
http://mendozaslanguage.blogspot.com/2010/05/linguists.html
Monday, May 3, 2010. Is a documentary that follows two linguists in their search to document dying languages. They travel to remote areas of the world that have been subject to colonization or linguistic suppression by a "killer" language, to search for native speakers. What drives the linguists to conduct their study is the hope to not lose a way of seeing the world by letting languages become extinct. One question that I have is why has it taken so long for people to appreciate linguistic diversity?

Thursday, April 15, 2010. Me Talk Pretty One Day". People start love you soon.". This sentence is grammatically incorrect for two reasons:. 1) The sentence is missing the auxiliary verb "will.". 2) The verb "love" is missing an infinitive marker. Thursday, April 8, 2010. I found the part about these gaps between words to be profoundly interesting. In writing about this phenomenon, Bryson exposes a link between language and society. Why is there a word to describe a person who has an urge to look through the windows of the homes he or she passes, but no words to describe the feelings between love and hate? Why is there a word in English to distinguish between brain and mind, but no such words to separate the two in Japanese? This chapter has put m...
