PocketShip Build: February 2014
http://pocketship.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html
This blog will track the building of a PocketShip kit from Chesapeake Light Craft. Thursday, February 27, 2014. Fitting Out. Part 2. Last I left off I was adding all the fitting out parts for the PocketShip. It's amazing how time consuming this is. Seems like there is an endless list of little things to do once you've got the hull built. On another note, my sails from CLC arrived last week. They subcontract those out to a sailmaker whose name I've lost. Anyway he did a very nice job. I made up about a do...
PocketShip Build: May 2015
http://pocketship.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html
This blog will track the building of a PocketShip kit from Chesapeake Light Craft. Wednesday, May 20, 2015. PocketShip in the Florida 120. With many different sailing conditions. The first day was 11 hours of bob and bake beating against minimal winds and being happy to reach 3kts. We spent 12 hours covering the 35 miles. The next day the forecast for the bay seemed better and it was. Fine easy sailing in stark contrast to the day before. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). PocketShip in the Florida 120.
PocketShip Build: August 2013
http://pocketship.blogspot.com/2013_08_01_archive.html
This blog will track the building of a PocketShip kit from Chesapeake Light Craft. Sunday, August 25, 2013. I've a proponent of System 3 WR-LPU (Water Reducible Linear Poly Urethane) since it is water soluble easy to roll or spray and provides very nice result - most of the time. I prepared the hull with high build primer meant for this kind of paint and sanded it smooth. So far so good. Then I sprayed the "Mercer Green" color coats. Had a few runs but nothing I couldn't take care of. So far ok. This is ...
PocketShip Build: Maiden Voyage

This blog will track the building of a PocketShip kit from Chesapeake Light Craft. Thursday, May 22, 2014. At the dock after the christening ceremony. Getting ready to leave with Gilligan (Scott in the sunglasses). We're off down the canal and into Little Lake Conway. The rest is eye candy sailing pics. May 24, 2014 at 4:29 AM. Beautiful boat and great pictures! If I can build as quickly as you did, I only have another 600 hours to go :). May 24, 2014 at 11:11 PM. Buthow many hours this session?

This blog will track the building of a PocketShip kit from Chesapeake Light Craft. Friday, May 30, 2014. Ordering up some canvas. Not wanting to have to take the sails off and on each time I go out I've decided it's time to get some canvas made for my PocketShip. This is the ordered short list of what I'm having a custom canvas guy estimate for me. 1 Main Sail Cover. 2 Sacrificial Furling Jib Cover. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Ordering up some canvas. Sun Monkey Island: September 2014
http://sunmonkeypocketship.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html
Building and sailing a PocketShip in the land of 10,000 lakes. Monday, September 29, 2014. That's a Whole Lotta 'Glass - Cockpit Fiberglass. Friday, I got out with Sailor Beth on Lake Pepin. What a spectacular fall day that was. Her 30' sloop cut through the water like a champ; the fall colors along the Wisconsin and Minnesota bluffs were truly stunning. You don't hear much about Chrysler TMI's, but you should. They are fine vessels. But my favorite sail of the weekend was with none other than Garage Sail.

Building and sailing a PocketShip in the land of 10,000 lakes. Friday, June 14, 2013. Thinking back to high school science class, I remembered that water will seek its own level. This explains why it runs off the table and onto the floor and doesn't shoot to the ceiling. It's also the rationale behind cool new liquid telescope mirrors. Tack welds forward of floor 4. It's a mess. Between 4 and 5, with slightly thickened epoxy used to smooth it out. This looked a lot like the one above. After epoxy at bulk...

Building and sailing a PocketShip in the land of 10,000 lakes. Sunday, October 26, 2014. A Flippin' Boat Party. My friends are a bit flaky, and those who aren't, are always busy. Those who are both flaky and busy are some of the more interesting people I know, and indeed some of my best friends, but man is it hard to get a few flaky, busy people together on a single Sunday afternoon, including myself. Testing the furniture straps. These were affectionately renamed the strap ons. The crew settles in for t...

Building and sailing a PocketShip in the land of 10,000 lakes. Saturday, June 28, 2014. Down and Out - St. Maarten Bound. View from Tintamarre to St. Martin in background. Bavaria 39' - this ain't no pocket cruiser! Labels: st. martin. Monday, June 9, 2014. Spreadsheets for Jibsheets - Assorted Progress. A cat sitting at anchor in a St. Martin bay. The tip cured in place and faired. Once that was set, I could turn my attention to the rest of the area. I sanded down what I could and added 6 oz 'glass ...

Building and sailing a PocketShip in the land of 10,000 lakes. Monday, December 22, 2014. Some time ago, I wrote on these pages that I actually started this blog to trace my efforts to join the Department of State as a Foreign Service Officer. Last May, I passed the final test. Well, that next boot camp is January, 2015 and I received my official travel orders last week. In other words, less than 3 weeks from now as I write this. I will be packing up what I can on January 8 and driving out to beg...Pocke...

Second coat finshed, a few hours later. First coat done, working on footwell. You can't see it, but I'm sweating buckets here. Update: Fast forward in time to the 3rd coat down. After the third coat. Much better coverage. I don't think I'll do a 4th. Saturday, October 26, 2013. C-269*M D-11.3NM S-3K. In the meantime...

Building and sailing a PocketShip in the land of 10,000 lakes. Monday, June 3, 2013. A little known fact about this blog is that it actually started as I began the process to become a Foreign Service Officer. The Black passport. It goes with everything. For anyone curious, here's what trying to get into the State Department looks like to date:. October 2010 - Took FS exam #1. Passed. November 2010 - Submitted short essays for QEP. January 2011 - Did not pass QEP #1. End candidacy. Baghdad is more likely&...

It Won’t Float! « Building Pocketship "Journey"
https://pocketshipjourney.wordpress.com/2014/06/10/it-wont-float
Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing – absolutely nothing – half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats. Kenneth Grahame, The Wind in the Willows. It Won’t Float! June 10, 2014. As you might be able to tell from the long time between blog posts, my work on “Journey” came to a sudden halt around the first of April. When we first found out that our daughter and her husband were expecting a baby, my wife told her that we would buy the crib for our new grandson. “BUY a crib? 8220;Journ...

PocketShip
I ordered the plans for the PocketShip on July 6 2009, along with plans for a Wood Duck 10 and an Eastport Pram. I have already picked out a name - Orca, after the famous line by Police Chief Brody in the movie Jaws. "You're gonna need a bigger boat! The PocketShip is designed by John C. Harris. Dave's Pocketship
A pictorial history of the building of the Curtis family "Pocketship" sailboat. Hopefully, this will be a well documented record from choosing what sailboat to build to the first time the sailboat is put into the water. Sunday, November 24, 2013. And now, for something completely different! This post has absolutely nothing to do with Pocketship or sailing. It is an unabashed self-serving promotion of the official launch of my first novel that I am optimistic you will not be offended by. The book is suita...
