A pictorial history of the building of the Curtis family "Pocketship" sailboat. Hopefully, this will be a well documented record from choosing what sailboat to build to the first time the sailboat is put into the water. Saturday, June 26, 2010. Furry Pirates and Landlocked by Water. It's hard to believe it has been 8 months since my last posting. I could make excuses about being busy at Christmas, visiting our kids in Australia in February and March but it just comes down to being lazy. The water on the ...

A pictorial history of the building of the Curtis family "Pocketship" sailboat. Hopefully, this will be a well documented record from choosing what sailboat to build to the first time the sailboat is put into the water. Sunday, November 24, 2013. And now, for something completely different! This post has absolutely nothing to do with Pocketship or sailing. It is an unabashed self-serving promotion of the official launch of my first novel that I am optimistic you will not be offended by. The book is suita...

Hopefully, this will be a well documented record from choosing what sailboat to build to the first time the sailboat is put into the water. Saturday, November 13, 2010. Year End 2010: Addendum (newest boat projects). We decided to go check that "So True's" portable garage survived and were pleased to find out that everything was still secure. This gave us more confidence that the boat's winter storage should be uneventful.

Sun Monkey Island: September 2014

http://sunmonkeypocketship.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html

Building and sailing a PocketShip in the land of 10,000 lakes. Monday, September 29, 2014. That's a Whole Lotta 'Glass - Cockpit Fiberglass. Friday, I got out with Sailor Beth on Lake Pepin. What a spectacular fall day that was. Her 30' sloop cut through the water like a champ; the fall colors along the Wisconsin and Minnesota bluffs were truly stunning. You don't hear much about Chrysler TMI's, but you should. They are fine vessels. But my favorite sail of the weekend was with none other than Garage Sail.

Building and sailing a PocketShip in the land of 10,000 lakes. Friday, June 14, 2013. Thinking back to high school science class, I remembered that water will seek its own level. This explains why it runs off the table and onto the floor and doesn't shoot to the ceiling. It's also the rationale behind cool new liquid telescope mirrors. Tack welds forward of floor 4. It's a mess. Between 4 and 5, with slightly thickened epoxy used to smooth it out. This looked a lot like the one above. After epoxy at bulk...

Building and sailing a PocketShip in the land of 10,000 lakes. Sunday, October 26, 2014. A Flippin' Boat Party. My friends are a bit flaky, and those who aren't, are always busy. Those who are both flaky and busy are some of the more interesting people I know, and indeed some of my best friends, but man is it hard to get a few flaky, busy people together on a single Sunday afternoon, including myself. Testing the furniture straps. These were affectionately renamed the strap ons. The crew settles in for t...

Building and sailing a PocketShip in the land of 10,000 lakes. Monday, December 22, 2014. Some time ago, I wrote on these pages that I actually started this blog to trace my efforts to join the Department of State as a Foreign Service Officer. Last May, I passed the final test. Well, that next boot camp is January, 2015 and I received my official travel orders last week. In other words, less than 3 weeks from now as I write this. I will be packing up what I can on January 8 and driving out to beg...Pocke...

Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing – absolutely nothing – half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats. Kenneth Grahame, The Wind in the Willows. It Won’t Float! June 10, 2014. As you might be able to tell from the long time between blog posts, my work on “Journey” came to a sudden halt around the first of April. When we first found out that our daughter and her husband were expecting a baby, my wife told her that we would buy the crib for our new grandson. “BUY a crib? 8220;Journ...

PocketShip Build

This blog will track the building of a PocketShip kit from Chesapeake Light Craft. Wednesday, May 20, 2015. PocketShip in the Florida 120. With many different sailing conditions. The first day was 11 hours of bob and bake beating against minimal winds and being happy to reach 3kts. We spent 12 hours covering the 35 miles. The next day the forecast for the bay seemed better and it was. Fine easy sailing in stark contrast to the day before. Monday, January 26, 2015. Some things to fix up. Mrs TaTas has bee...

The PocketShip Yard

Tuesday, July 21, 2015. About halfway through the build I got a crazy idea that I could finish the project AND do the Texas 200. There is a saying that the homebuilt aircraft guys have when you ask them when their projects will be finished, "80% and 80% more to go! When I was halfway I thought I was at the the 80% point. To make the Texas 200 I went into overdrive to finish the boat in the six weeks leading up to the launch. It was a great day! Soloing the Texas 200 is a bit difficult when it comes to do...

What Grinds My Gears. Sunday, August 14, 2011. What does the story signify? The Story exemplifies a hate between two classes.
