Prose and Potatoes: June 2011

http://proseandpotatoes.blogspot.com/2011_06_01_archive.html

Thursday, June 16, 2011. Where did you learn how to make the potatoes like that? And I like the idea that a damn good recipe will stick around even longer than a lover, and once you try these potatoes, you will want to swear undying love and commitment to them "until death do you part.". 6 Russet potatoes, well-scrubbed. 6 Tablespoons butter, or enough duck fat. For a very thick layer to coat the pan. Monday, June 6, 2011. And friend, Amanda, we were told to go to Franktuary. And Horsemen of the Esophagus.

Prose and Potatoes: Pomegrantes, Chickpeas, and Fairy Dust

http://proseandpotatoes.blogspot.com/2011/11/pomegrantes-chickpeas-and-fairy-dust.html

Thursday, November 17, 2011. Pomegrantes, Chickpeas, and Fairy Dust. The first time I ate a pomegranate seed I was on a school bus, on the rural back roads of North-Central Nebraska, and Lindsay Wagner was showing off. She was a harmless elementary school social climber because as a fifth grader, she was a year younger than me, she was in the remedial reading class, and she was ridiculous. As a sixth grader, I was obviously too mature for that. But one day, Lindsay’s shenanigans did get my attention.

Prose and Potatoes: November 2010

http://proseandpotatoes.blogspot.com/2010_11_01_archive.html

Tuesday, November 30, 2010. Pumpkins with a story to tell. Mattie after her lounge singer days. I guess backstory is a way of making sense of things and a way of letting your imagination run wild. For local foodists, for people that care about where their food comes from and if animals or people or the environment were harmed along the way, then backstory becomes important, an inextricable part of the eating experience. Pumpkin Pie making is chaotic. From Bon Appetit, but we still had pumpkin puree left.

Prose and Potatoes: December 2010

http://proseandpotatoes.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html

Wednesday, December 22, 2010. Visions of Dutch Babies Danced In My Head. I dream about food. Not only do I have waking daydreams of lentil stews and fresh baked bread and kale and a million other foods I love. Not only does my mind wander to delicious meals when I'm driving or trying to meditate, but my sleeping dreams are also quite often invaded by visions of sugar plums and other such fancies. Slightly adapted from Molly Wizenberg's A Homemade Life. And Marion Cunningham's Fannie Farmer Cookbook.

Prose and Potatoes: May 2011

Monday, May 30, 2011. Summer Road Food: Thrown Together, Not Fussy. This meal is so easy, in fact, I whipped it up the night before we left for Virginia, and it made a light, healthy, and quick road lunch. Traveling with food is not as difficult as most people think, and it really saves me from eating gas station junk food. I've written about the merits of road-tripping with a cooler stashed in the backseat before,. And a glug of soy sauce. You can leave it at that, but I rarely do. The spiciness of the ...

Love me, love my food. Sharing the foodie love since 2007*. Skip to primary content. Skip to secondary content. Newer posts →. July 11, 2013. I made this for a St. Patrick’s day party this past winter. It was delicious and rich. The chocolate and beer combination make for a sweet and slightly bitter combination that works. Plus, the cream cheese frosting adds that extra sweet, rich finish. I definitely want to make it again! 1 cup stout or porter beer, such as Guinness. 10 Tb unsalted butter. Add the van...

Saturday, May 23, 2009. The origins of Dr. Rover…a tale in multiple entries…. Throbbing, the pain reached every part of my body. The Everyday Palate: April 2011

http://everydaypalate.blogspot.com/2011_04_01_archive.html

Sunday, April 17, 2011. And So It Goes. The semester is drawing to an end. For some that means graduation is right around the corner. All the excitement of the future is ahead of them. Along with the wonder, frustration, hope, and possibility. And while I'm excited with them, I'm sad because it means some very good friends will be moving away. Last year was Babs, and this year is Amy, Chris, Alex, Nikki, and Ian. I'm not sure how I feel about this. Of course the greater parts of my days are spent grading...

The Everyday Palate: An Exploration of Cheese (A GSW 1120 Honors Collaboration)

http://everydaypalate.blogspot.com/2012/02/exploration-of-cheese-gsw-1120-honors.html

Sunday, February 5, 2012. An Exploration of Cheese (A GSW 1120 Honors Collaboration). As I’ve hinted at in my Connotation Press. Column as well as in an episode of Spatula. I’m addicted to cheese. I eat it at least once a day, and sometimes well more than that. What’s beautiful about cheese is that no two are the same. I’ve even found very different flavor profiles among the same brand of cheese; for example, I’ve had Grass Point Farm Sharp Cheddars. The five cheeses we tasted and critiqued were:. Withou...

Sunday, November 20, 2011. Documenting A Weekend (Or A Lack Thereof). Alexandria's Opening Night 11/18/2011. My dear friend and co-star of Spatula. Says where you find a foodie, you find a camera in hand and guests at the dinner table rolling their eyes. It's true. Almost any time I go out to eat, I take my camera. I never know when I will need to capture a meal in a photograph. Then, joined by her hubs, we headed to Findlay for the opening of Alexandria's. Where Michael from Revolver is the head chef&#4...

The Everyday Palate: Eggs: Two Ways!

http://everydaypalate.blogspot.com/2011/12/eggs-two-ways.html

Thursday, December 1, 2011. One of my side projects this semester has been filming and airing an online cooking show through Connotation Press. Our second episode all about eggs really showcases how versatile eggs are. In fact, it was hard to pick what egg recipe to do. Easily, we could have made mayo, a meringue, omelets, a custard, a quiche, a strata, etc. etc. etc. In the end, I chose a frittata because it is my favorite egg dish, and one I make quite often. http://everydaypalate.blogspot.com/2011/12/i-aint-playing-games.html

Sunday, December 11, 2011. I Ain't Playing Games! The past two weeks I have been completely preoccupied. I graded over 125 student essays, read over 125 student reflections, and helped over 125 students prepare for the portfolio process. And the end of the semester- all the while reading The Hunger Games. Needless to say, I am exhausted. But I am satisfied. With the end of the semester. And with how the Hunger Games. Really all I want to talk about is the food. Reading The Hunger Games. Was the first tim...

Monday, June 27, 2011. Weeknight Meals, Comfort Foods, and Perfection (or Not). It's no surprise that I usually spend a whole day cooking, especially in the summer. Whereas most people hate cooking or "being tied to the kitchen," I feel most peaceful, happy, fulfilled, and sane when I'm in the kitchen. At the same time, I have writing projects, syllabus planning, organization projects, and lots of reading and writing I want to do this summer. Ex-wife potatoes roasted in duck fat. It was a meal that I ate...

Not another blog about Halloween. This is not about Halloween. It is about today, November the first – all Saints’ day. This is where Halloween got its name, its date and its reputation. All saints day, or all hallows’ day, was seen as one of the most important and powerful days of the year. Yet it is almost forgotten now. People who stood up and spoke out for slaves, orphans, the poor, the prisoners, the enemies, the oppressed, the uneducated, the addicted, the scared and the forgotten. People who&#8217...
