March 19, 2014. Did the title grab your attention? It should have. According to Reichert (2003), sexual content in advertising attracts attention, however, if the sexual content has no relevance to the product or service being provided, it can actually distract the consumer away from the aim of the advert. In my opinion, no. I think it makes the customer look twice at the advert and brings their attention to the product. Posted in Consumer Psychology. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Epigenetics and the Fear of Certain Smells. December 4, 2013. Often we wonder why we are afraid of certain things when we have no reason to be. Recent research has suggested that the reason could lie in what your father or grandfather has experienced in their lifetimes before they had children (Dias and Ressler, 2013). This blog will aim to explain how epigenetics play a huge role in our development, even before our conception. Posted in Emotion and Motivation. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Notify me of ne...

March 26, 2014. The use of shocking imagery in advertising has been going on for a long time, but it is still highly contested. Many people complain about the shocking images used, especially when the advert is shown during the daytime when children can see. So, while highly effective, shocking advertising is also highly offensive but I suppose that’s the point! Dahl, D. W., Frankenberger, K. D., and Manchandra, R. V. (2003). Does it pay to shock? Just another WordPress.com site. Don’t get intoxicated, get twitter. 205 people have been used as a part of an experiment to measure if social urges such as twitter, email and facebook are more common and harder to dismiss than those of cigarette and alcohol cravings. Just so were all aware whilst writing this blog I also have twitter, facebook and emails up in my browser… WHOOPS. I think that this study should have been carried out on a much wider scale for it to give a valid and reliable argument for a...

Micro expressions: Is it actually possible to hide our emotions? Humans are good at recognising full facial expressions (Freitas-Magalhaes, 2007), but when a person attempts to conceal the emotion they are feeling, micro expression’s occur. Micro expressions are difficult notice, mostly only highly trained individuals are able to distinguish them. Just over 50 people out of nearly 20,000 have the ability to detect them without training (Camilleri, 2009), but even with proper training the recognition ...

One topic that was talked about in our last research methods lecture of the year was the issue of ends justifying means. Currently, price discounts (e.g. ‘50% off’) dominate the market of sales promotions (Darke and Chung, 2005). What is it about sales that are so appealing to us? Why do 30%-60% of all retail priced items end in the digit nine (Schindler and Kirby, 1997)? So, why is it that certain sales tactics influence our purchase behaviour? Chase behaviour,...
