To Earth's most fascinating, diverse and overlooked creatures. Thursday, July 18, 2013. This was the highlight for me, but there were many other great findings:. Bottom: Ponderosa Pine log micro habitat. Bottom: Courtright Resevoir, habitat. This one I had foolishly mistaken for a Cantharid, so I didn't collect it. But after a longer look at the picture I realized it is really a member of the genus Asclera; another species from the family Oedemeridae I found on this trip. Tuesday, July 2, 2013. This was ...

To Earth's most fascinating, diverse and overlooked creatures. Sierra Nevada, California. My name is Jon Quist. I am not an expert taxonomist, blogger, writer and most of all speller by any means, but I can feel myself moving in that direction every day. I love the outdoors, especially non-touristy places where I can go hike, swim, camp and bug collect without having to explain why I'm flipping rocks and peeling bark off of fallen trees. Guadalupe Nipomo Dunes, San Luis Obispo County, coastal California.

Off the Top of My Head
Off the Top of My Head. Thursday, January 12, 2017. It’s all Larry’s fault. Like I didn’t have enough problems (see last week’s post). Back in December my six-year-old laptop finally gave up the ghost, with incredibly bad timing. But then, a computer’s hard drive crash never comes at a good time, does it? I was always limited by library hours and the amount of time I could stay on a machine, assuming a machine was available. I love my laptop and won’t give it up.
