Translation Theories: The Concept of Norm

http://readingandpondering.blogspot.com/2005/11/concept-of-norm.html

Sunday, November 27, 2005. The Concept of Norm. The concept of norm, introduced by Gideon Toury in the 1970’s, is used to refer to regularities of translation behaviour within a specific sociocultural situation (Baker 1998: 163). Although the concept of norm has contributed invaluably to the field of translation studies, translation scholars, like Pym (1998a), have also criticized Toury’s approach for several reasons, one of which will be discussed in this response paper. Pym, Anthony. 1998b. Met...Toury...

Translation Theories: Even-Zohar's Polysystem Theory

http://readingandpondering.blogspot.com/2005/11/even-zohars-polysystem-theory.html

Friday, November 11, 2005. In sum, Even-Zohar’s polysystem theory has provided translation scholars with a perspective that helps to grasp the complicated relationship between literary systems and translated literatures more profoundly. I believe that the theory has carried out vital roles in that it increased the level of awareness about translated literature as a particular literary system (Even-Zohar 1978:117) and drew attention to the relationship between translated literature and other systems.

Translation Theories: Berman and Venuti's Views on Translating the Foreign

http://readingandpondering.blogspot.com/2005/12/berman-and-venutis-views-on.html

Monday, December 19, 2005. Berman and Venuti's Views on Translating the Foreign. I do not assert that the translator can only give the definition of the word or explain its meaning in such a case. On the contrary, I believe that there are various factors that may lead to lengthy target texts when compared with source texts. Do we really have the desire to translate because of unconscious forces that direct us towards ‘deforming’ source texts (Berman in Venuti 2000: 286)? Venuti, Lawrence. 1998a. ...Venut...

Translation Theories: Vermeer, Reiss and Nord’s Views on Translation as an Action

http://readingandpondering.blogspot.com/2005/10/vermeer-reiss-and-nords-views-on.html

Sunday, October 30, 2005. Vermeer, Reiss and Nord’s Views on Translation as an Action. In brief, it is obvious that Vermeer’s skopos theory has been influential on the modern understanding of the translator and the process of translation. I believe his perception of the translator resembles that of a researcher who knows what he is doing and has research questions whose answers he strives to find. Nord, Christiane. 1997. Translating as a Purposeful Activity. Manchester: St Jerome. Routledge. 160 172.

Read Rave Repeat | I'm either reading or thinking about it.

I'm either reading or thinking about it. I spent today with John Keats. I walked down to Keats house, and read his letters to his love, Fanny Brawne, in front of the garden where they might have strolled hand-in-hand, glancing at the windows through which they might have spied each other. So today, I spent the day with John Keats. I saw him live and love and laugh and cry. I feel as though I know. John Keats, in fact, I quite believe I do. August 17, 2015.
