Rev. Scott's Thoughts: September 2011

Thursday, September 29, 2011. Is Contemplation for the weak? So is Contemplation really a retreat from all that is anxiety producing and challenging? Merton contests such assumption us with a strong word of "no.". When Lucy asks about the mysterious figure of the Lion, Aslan (the Christ figure). "His he safe? She asks fearful and innocently. "Well of course he isn't safe," responds Mr. Beaver. If Contemplation is about encountering the God who is holy. The Life with God Bible. Asks “Could one reaso...

Thursday, April 26, 2012. General Conference Day 2 Reflections (Naive and Gullible as they may be). As I leave General Conference, I leave a little more impressed with the global connection that is the United Methodist Church. I am impressed how passionate so many are for Christ, for the world, and secondarily for the United Methodist Church. I also leave a little less gullible and naïve. Wednesday, April 25, 2012. Random Thoughts from General Conference. Monday, April 2, 2012. How does your theology sha...

Monday, September 24, 2012. This past Sunday evening our church had the opportunity to host a Christian non-profit organization that has one of the only full sets of the Tanakh scrolls. The Tanakh is the Jewish way of referring to the Hebrew Bible Bible or what the Christians would call the Old Testament. (There are very few full sets for various reasons.). Rabbi Marty Cohen joined us to explain what goes into the making of a Hebrew scroll. One of the larger scrolls on display was over 600 years old!

Tuesday, October 11, 2011. The Peace of Office Suppy Stores. I love walking through office supply stores. The organization of the store and all the products designed to aid us in being more organized gets my blood pumping. The binders, fancy organizers, clips and even the people with the headsets on seem efficient. Perhaps my favorite part is sitting at the clean desks that have almost nothing on them and dreaming that one day my desk will emulate this. Thankfully, Jesus promises us His peace which goes ...

Wednesday, February 22, 2012. The Bachelor, Happiness, Lent, and Holiness. Scripture: 1 Peter 1:15-16. I was "outed" a few weeks ago in a church service which revealed. Unfortunately in our society the highest pursuit in life is happiness. Yet, as we've all learned, happiness is relative and fleeting. More lasting and our deeper craving is God's call to holiness. Happiness points beyond itself to something greater and that is holiness. Just in case you need a refresher for Lent, checkout:. Psychologicall...

Friday, May 27, 2011. Scripture: 1 Timothy 3:16. Perhaps you've heard of or believe in the doctrine of inerrancy. This doctrine states that the Bible is inerrant (without error) in its original manuscripts. The problem with this to me is it begs the question: which manuscripts? What are some difference between reading for information versus transformation? Read the passage again so that it speaks freshly not just to your head, but to your inner self. What affirmations are there from God? And gentleness&#...
