L'Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia svolge un servizio di monitoraggio 24 ore su 24 e 7 giorni su 7 per il Dipartimento Nazionale della Protezione Civile dai primi anni '80 basato su una rapida valutazione e informazione di ogni evento sismico. I terremoti catastrofici avvenuti in passato ci hanno insegnato che un'informazione rapida e precisa è indispensabile affinché possano essere organizzati i primi soccorsi nelle zone colpite.
