Ruby in the kitchen

Ruby in the kitchen. Sunday, August 5, 2012. Peanut butter banana goodness. Although I try to stick mainly to "whole foods", I like to have baked goods now and then. I have found all kinds of gluten-free substitutes that I really enjoy. Unfortunately, a $6 loaf of bread isn't often in the budget. I am in search of a bread recipe as good as the high priced store bought ones. So far I haven't found the perfect one but I keep trying. I gave this recipe a try recently and it is good- Paleo Bread. Ruby in the kitchen: A nutty date

http://www.rubyinthekitchen.blogspot.com/2010/02/nutty-date.html

Ruby in the kitchen. Sunday, February 7, 2010. I wish I had taken a picture of these cookies. I guess I will just have to make them again. I had some extra medjool dates. To use at Christmas and came up with a recipe that I like. I made it again this weekend. I added some dried cranberries this time too. I think that it was an improvement. It added a nice slightly tart flavor that worked well with the sweetmess of the dates. 1 cup medjool dates chopped (it helps if they are very fresh/soft).

Ruby in the kitchen: Foccacia

http://www.rubyinthekitchen.blogspot.com/2009/09/foccacia.html

Ruby in the kitchen. Tuesday, September 22, 2009. This spring we planted 20# of seed potatoes. We are now enjoying the harvest. The majority of them were grown in bags or pots so the harvesting is very easy with little damage to the spuds. However, some were planted in the raised beds and get nicked when harvested. They are perfect candidates for immediate cooking into lefse or other breads made with potatoes. 1 cup potatoes mashed. 1 T rapid rise yeast. 1 1/2 cup (105F) water. 1 T olive oil. What a grea...

Ruby in the kitchen: Tweaking, always tweaking

http://www.rubyinthekitchen.blogspot.com/2009/12/tweaking-always-tweaking.html

Ruby in the kitchen. Saturday, December 12, 2009. Tweaking, always tweaking. I've tried a number of recipes for gluten free bread and rolls. There are some that I liked well enough but not so much that I cared if I made them again. Here is an exception. I wish I could claim this recipe as my own but it is just some tweaks I applied to this recipe. And give her recipes a try. No matter what version you choose, they are at their best when warm. 4 tsp apple cider vinegar. 3/4 tsp xanthan gum. Watermark temp...

Ruby in the kitchen: Fun with Garbanzo bean flour

http://www.rubyinthekitchen.blogspot.com/2011/03/fun-with-garbanzo-bean-flour.html

Ruby in the kitchen. Sunday, March 20, 2011. Fun with Garbanzo bean flour. I ❤ Socca. I probably don't make Socca the "right way" but what I have been making is simple, gluten free and delicious. Works for me. Garbanzo bean flour, water, oil and seasonings. Couldn't be easier. Two of my favorite versions can be found from David Lebovitz. And "Affairs of Living". Labels: Garbanzo bean flour. petals and thistles: Wow!

http://petalsandthistles.blogspot.com/2011/10/wow.html

Ramblings along the road of life. Saturday, October 1. That's the word that comes to mind when you go outside right now. Wow! Last night was a perfect evening for a walk at Lake Bemidji State Park. Those lights across the lake in the photo below are the football stadium where the Bemidji Lumberjacks were playing their Homecoming game- they won! We thought about going to the game but I'm glad we went for a walk instead! October 1, 2011 at 1:37 PM. Your photos are stunning! October 6, 2011 at 5:13 PM.

Ramblings along the road of life. Monday, August 22. I think that is what our kids are yelling lately, at least to themselves. But for me it's more like SAAAAAAAADNEEEEEEESS! Letting go of your kids is one of those thistles in life that ya gotta do but gosh it is painful, mixed in with exciting, and a roller coaster of emotions for this momma. Last week Leanne passed her driver's test. Here she is- one happy girl! I made sure he had a photo of us so he doesn't forget his family :). Nevermind that he's on...

http://petalsandthistles.blogspot.com/2010_04_01_archive.html

Ramblings along the road of life. Saturday, April 17. Well, I did it. I put away my turtlenecks. I know. I know what you are thinking.it's a bit early isn't it? After all, it's only April 17th. Well, what can I say, I am a risk-taker! I still have all my scarves out, however, just in case my neck complains too much. So here's the extent of my "spring cleaning" so far. It feels good, doesn't it? And here's the bags of clothes that are going somewhere else to take up space.yah hoo! Links to this post.

Ramblings along the road of life. Thursday, February 9. Extreme Makeover Kitchen Edition. Gosh, it has been a LONG time since I posted on here. Life gets crazy I guess. I get lazy I guess. Plus, I discovered Peggle. Two to three weeks max, right? Here's the before pictures. Our new stove is in the before photo). Started out painting the ceiling in living, dining, kitchen and entry. Possibly the least favorite part of the whole thing. : /. Then tearing out all the old cabinets. Only two and a half months ...

Ramblings along the road of life. Thursday, September 29. Most of the Oakes bunch gathered in Bemidji on the weekend of July 4th. Okay, so I am a little slow in posting. I would have sooner but I lost all but 2 of my photos of the whole weekend! Darn it). I don't know how- they disappeared out of My Pictures folder and before I realized it I had erased my SD camera card to make more room on it! Drat) It was one of those very thistley moments. Grrrr. Ramblings along the road of life. Saturday, May 29. Boys will be boys. Or grown men will be boys, I should say. Here's some shots of a couple weeks ago when Bill went with some guy friends to a cabin up nort for a weekend. Four-wheelers, mud, steak, cards, sauna, fartin' and giggling. Ramblings along the road of life. Saturday, October 23. Well, I got out my turtlenecks. It's time. The neighbors harvested the corn field. Now I feel rather exposed on the south side and it sends a shiver. But it is still warmer than usual and I am not complaining. Cut down some dead trees for wood for the sauna. And Landon had a big bonfire with some friends. My favorite shrubs are the barberry bushes with their. Variegated colors and bright red berries in the fall. So cool! It was getting dark on us.

Ruby in the Dust

Monday, March 24, 2014. How to make a kids' travel journal. We're going on a much-anticipated family holiday tomorrow. The four of us are off to South Africa to spend time with my amazing family, most of whom we haven't seen for well over 7 years. Because we'll be away for a few weeks, I wanted the boys to be able to keep a journal so they can remember everything we'll do. I created the pages in Illustrator, using the Langdon font and some free downloads (links at bottom). The boys are very proud of ...

August 4, 2012. 2011 was a disappointing year for peppers here. Oh sure we enjoyed the 4 peppers we got but with over 20 plants, you can see the year wasn't a pepper success. 2012 has been spectacular. We are growing 2 varieties. We are freezing some and I get to eat peppers daily. Yum! Are a wonderful treat sauteed and topped with a hint of coarse sea salt. August 28, 2011. Take some, we've got plenty. The raspberries did quite well (and are delicious. We also have a good supply of potatoes, zucchini.

Saturday, March 7, 2015. A couple weeks ago we added 12 new additions to the homestead. Chicks! I'm a total newbe to chicken keeping, but a backyard flock of chickens has been high on my new-home wishlist. I selected a dozen chickens- five Buff Orpington, five Australorp, and two Black Copper Marans.
