Running In Oz

Tuesday, November 04, 2008. Two weeks later I look down at the medal they draped around my neck after I crossed the finish line and I still smile. I'm a marathoner. I've got the bling. Two years ago I started a marathon, but did not finish. Believe me, the sting of a DNF. After running 19 miles lingers for a long time. A few injuries and tweaks here and there this time around, but for the most part I kept the wheels on the wagon. When race day for the Kansas City Marathon. As for many other areas of my l...

Running In Oz: My Garmin ate my homework, er, training run

http://runninginoz.blogspot.com/2008/07/my-garmin-ate-my-homework-er-training.html

Wednesday, July 23, 2008. My Garmin ate my homework, er, training run. I haven’t trotted out the-dog-ate-my-homework excuse since, oh, about the fifth grade. While it didn’t work so well with Ms. Chase – she sure was a great teacher, but she didn’t put up with any nonsense – I am forced to try again. You gotta believe me. I did the work, but it just disappeared. Yes, yesterday I put in my miles. Seven of them. Really. 8211; I plugged in my Forerunner 205 into my PC. It was like my seven miles in 1 hour a...

Running In Oz: 12/01/2007 - 01/01/2008

http://runninginoz.blogspot.com/2007_12_01_archive.html

Monday, December 31, 2007. Thought I heard the strains of banjo strumming coming through the woods as I ran down a dark and lonely road in southern Missouri yesterday. Maybe it was just my imagination. But the run definitely had a bit of a Deliverance. Vibe Although I was trying to keep a moderate to slow pace during my continued somewhat-pathetic attempt at base training, wild thoughts about what might be lurking in the Ozarks woods caused me to pick up the pace a bit. Friday, December 21, 2007. A typic...

Running In Oz: 01/01/2008 - 02/01/2008

http://runninginoz.blogspot.com/2008_01_01_archive.html

Thursday, January 31, 2008. Thought I heard footsteps chasing from behind on the run this morning. Move out, pump it and get going. I attacked a hill even though it was early in the run and I should have remained in warm-up phase. As I looked back over my shoulder I didn’t see any fellow runners on the road. But with all of the meteorological hubbub over the past 24 hours, I did envision the coming storm following in my tracks, trying to catch and overtake me. Sunday, January 27, 2008. After continuing t...

Running In Oz: 02/01/2008 - 03/01/2008

http://runninginoz.blogspot.com/2008_02_01_archive.html

Sunday, February 24, 2008. We sincerely were glad to see you when you first arrived. Come on in and let me take your coat. Can I get you a drink? How’s the family? You cracked us up with your stories about the latest adventures of the little ones. We reminisced and enjoyed the visit by a friend we had not seen in quite some time. Sit, dinner’s ready. We ate, we laughed, we opened a bottle of wine. And then another. Good times. Good times. Then the hour started to get late. We didn. There goes a table leg.

Running In Oz: An oasis for runners

http://runninginoz.blogspot.com/2008/07/oasis-for-runners.html

Tuesday, July 08, 2008. An oasis for runners. I figured something out this morning. You’ll probably think it’s silly that I haven’t noticed before now. But here it is: I’m not a camel. No, really. I just checked. I looked in the mirror – it was kind of hard to turn my head around to the back, but I did it – and found that I didn’t have any humps. Not even one. So, I must ask myself, why have I been wandering in the desert without any water? I picked it up, admiring it, each time I went into the local run...

RobRuns: Sidewalks for dogs, streets for runners

http://robruns.blogspot.com/2013/08/sidewalks-for-dogs-streets-for-runners.html

Saturday, August 24, 2013. Sidewalks for dogs, streets for runners. You want to know why runners don't like to run on the sidewalk, why the street is normally the better choice despite the many ignorant drivers out there? Uneven surfaces, cars blocking the way, low-hanging trees, hoses, people backing out, children playing. And then this morning . As I came within speaking range, the woman spoke. She was pleasant, but firm. He does not want to play.". Oh, I said. I should have been in the street anyway.

RobRuns: Moving up in the age group

http://robruns.blogspot.com/2013/08/moving-up-in-age-group.html

Tuesday, August 06, 2013. Moving up in the age group. I needed some way to mark my 63rd birthday, which is today. People who golf want to shoot their age, but 63 would only get me two-thirds of the way around the course. I could spend $63, but where's the challenge in that? I considered running 63 miles, but thought I might not make it to work on time (next week). I'll have to check this out, but I think I burned a few extra calories today just because my Garmin watch knew I'd gone from 62 to 63 years old.

RobRuns: A race, sort of

http://robruns.blogspot.com/2013/08/a-race-sort-of.html

Monday, August 12, 2013. A race, sort of. The Star was a sponsor for Sunday's Susan Komen Race for the Cure, and as such had several comps to hand out. I know I said I wasn't going to race anything this year, but I like the idea of this event, and it was free to me, so I signed up for the non-competitive 5k. That meant I didn't get a chip and wouldn't figure in the official results. The first mile is mostly downhill, and I did it in 8:45. The next mile is all up hill, and it's kind of a grind, but I ...

RobRuns: Back to work

http://robruns.blogspot.com/2013/07/back-to-work.html

Monday, July 08, 2013. It's back to the routine now that my little 10-day break from work is over. I didn't get as much riding in as I thought I would during the break, but did get out a couple of times, once for 41 miles. The highlight of the period was a run along the Lake Superior waterfront in Grand Marais, Minn. on a cool Saturday morning. Beaches, lighthouses, sailboats, water. Not too hard to take. RobRuns: The Katy trail

http://robruns.blogspot.com/2013/10/the-katy-trail.html

Thursday, October 10, 2013. Two years ago at this time it was 100 ultra-hilly miles on asphalt in two days, and now this year it was 244 miles in 4 days on crushed limestone and about the flattest course you can imagine: the Katy Trail. Eight of us from our running club planned this challenge almost a year ago, and after months of preparation - not that much actual training, unfortunately - we hit the trail at its starting point in Clinton, Mo. The Magnificent 8 at the start in Clinton. Half of the ride.

RobRuns: Persistence wins out

http://robruns.blogspot.com/2013/11/persistence-wins-out.html

Saturday, November 23, 2013. After years of running and countless races of every conceivable length, I have finally found the magic formula for winning. Age persistence = 1st. Out of the blue a couple of weeks ago I decided to enter a 10k this weekend. Don't know why, other than I had trained myself for one without really meaning to, so I decided to put the effort to use. Where's the 10k turn? The course was a single loop for the 5k runners, and a second loop over the same route for the 10k runners. ...

RobRuns: Colors on the run

http://robruns.blogspot.com/2013/11/colors-on-run.html

Saturday, November 02, 2013. Colors on the run. After all the rain we've had this week, and all the running I've done on the treadmill, it sure was nice to get outside today. Cool, bright sunshine, slight breeze and, as a big bonus, fall colors at their height. The trail is finished now from the trail head at Gower Rd. all the way to Riverside, a distance of 3 miles. The. Yes, I actually stopped to take a picture. Line Creek Trail. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Speed and pace calculator. Running 5 ...

Running in Pearls

From Chubby Girl to Runner Girl. My running challenges and adventures. Friday, March 11, 2011. What a difference a year makes. Today I ran two slow miles since I still have achy feet! Mile number two always seems to be the "magic mile" for me, meaning, when I run I am usually miserable for the first two miles and then it's like a flip is switched and I get in the zone and love it. Of course, on long runs I always fall out of the zone but usually can get back in to it around the nine mile mark. With the h...
