Shetland Storm Force Photography: Out West

http://www.shetlandsfp.blogspot.com/2015/07/out-west.html

Sunday, 26 July 2015. On a visit out on the west side this last weekend it was good to be out in good weather. Lots of good birds to keep the interest including some young Ringed Plover, which seem late to me. The young are very well camouflaged blending in with the landscape and difficult to see if they are not moving around. With any gulls and skuas around they need every bit of help. We did see an otter, not very close but it did stay around for 20 mins feeding off shore. View my complete profile.

Shetland Storm Force Photography: November 2014

http://www.shetlandsfp.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

Monday, 24 November 2014. During the rest of the week lots of Fieldfare ad Redwing showed , while the ever present Fulmars glided past the car. A Robin continues to visit our garden and it was good to see a flock of nearly 100 Fieldfare landed in the field opposite our house. Curlews are also visiting the field with the odd Redshank especially early in the morning but are soon driven off by the Herring Gulls. Shetland Storm Force photography. Wednesday, 19 November 2014. Starts 19 January for 6 weeks, co...

Shetland Storm Force Photography: August 2015

http://www.shetlandsfp.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 25 August 2015. Autumn migration is always an exciting time, with more birds arriving in the easterly winds. With news of a possible Booted Warbler down at Sumburgh, we headed south in the hope that it may linger. Flocks of Starling started coming over, then a few Redshank and Rock Dove no doubt scared by the passing Merlin that was chasing a small bird. Another female Pied flycatcher moved along the more mature shrubs but stayed in the shade. Down at the jetty three Shag stood with wings outstr...

Shetland Storm Force Photography: Breeding Red Backed Shrikes

http://www.shetlandsfp.blogspot.com/2015/08/breeding-red-backed-shrikes.html

Friday, 14 August 2015. Breeding Red Backed Shrikes. The news is out that a pair of Red backed Shrikes have bred this year in Shetland. Quiet a few birds came into Shetland during the spring period and it looks like a male and female decided to stay on and breed. Already this year problems have occurred with other rare Shetland breeding birds when either over enthusiastic photographers or egg collectors have been involved. That's why I would never consider using a hide, you are just drawing attention to ...

Shetland move and experiences: August 2015

http://shetlanddream.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html

Saturday, 15 August 2015. For many people Yell is a place to drive through on the way to Unst. The road from the ferry passes the west side, virtually a straight road north. It does pass several interesting places if you have time to take a detour. Westsandwick beach is superb with parking nearby. A good place for Otters and a paddle. Yell in fact is the largest of the north isles with a population of around 900 people, most on the eastside. The normal pre wedding advertising above. This will come as goo...

Shetland move and experiences: January 2015

http://shetlanddream.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 20 January 2015. Same here , same there. Before we moved to Shetland we were asked, have you experienced a winter in Shetland? Well at that time no, but now we are 1/2 way through our first winter. People always say there is only two weathers in Shetland, Wet and very wet. Well I would like to add a few others. Windy and wet, very windy and wet, Gale force wind and wet, Hurricane force winds and wet but in between it can be still and dry, ` a day between the weather. Lightening has struck severa...

Shetland move and experiences: Bressay

http://shetlanddream.blogspot.com/2015/08/bressay.html

Sunday, 9 August 2015. Recently we have been getting around a few of the islands that we haven't visited for a few years. This weekend it was Bressay , well in fact this was the second visit of the week. He was renting land but from who, all I could see was nine deserted crofts, people left some 30 years ago. More evidence was on the beach with many rusting chains which had been used to tie up small open fishing boats many years ago. Last night was the final concert of Fiddle Frenzy and it was a superb e...

Shetland move and experiences: May 2015

http://shetlanddream.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html

Sunday, 31 May 2015. This week has been very mixed weather , even snow on Friday up on Yell and in the north mainland. On other days, showers some with hail, but also long periods of sun. The weather next week promises a heatwave for June, but we will have to see whether this extends to Shetland. Lerwick has had its share of interesting ships, which should increase in number as the summer progresses. The Dim Riv has yet to make an appearance but this normally coincides with the tourist season. This is a ...

Shetland move and experiences: Friendly

http://shetlanddream.blogspot.com/2015/07/friendly.html

Tuesday, 21 July 2015. On Thursday last week we went over to the music at Asta, it was packed. As always teas and homebakes came out at 9pm, as it was nice everyone enjoyed the food outside in the late evening sun. He could have easily involved other cars in a bad accident. Its been very busy at work but helping the old folk is very rewarding and it was good to see them enjoying an old Shetland film from the 1970's after their lunch. If you get chance please have a look at my other two blogs.

Friday, 22 August 2014. After several days of unpacking cardboard boxes we are nearly free of mountain of cardboard we just need extra storage space in the kitchen, this should be ready for collection next week. Most things have to come up from Scotland. You will not be in Shetland long before you find that music is an important feature of daily life in the isles. You can hear music most nights either in pubs or at the many concerts held at the Marlee, Islesburgh or Garrison theatres. Most of Shetland mu...

Monday, 23 February 2015. Just reading the Sheffield Star on Saturday and it was interesting that 2 People are murdered every month in South Yorkshire. We certainly don't miss this and feel very safe in Shetland. Minor incidents happen but these are normally in Lerwick and we have not seen any ourselves since moving here last April. St Ninian's Isle west side. Looking north towards Fitfull Head. Wednesday, 11 February 2015. Sunday, 1 February 2015. Lerwick Up Helly Aa. Shetland is famous for many things ...

Torsdag 13 augusti 2015. Idag har vi varit...
