The Shovel-Ready Garden: May 2013
http://shovelreadygarden.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html
Stimulating growth, one seed at a time. Thursday, May 30, 2013. Violet and yellow are on the opposite sides of the color wheel, which makes them complementary colors. The two most prolific bloomers in my late spring garden are violet and yellow. I fell in heads-over-heels with the tiny white-edged flowers of 'Sapphire Showers' Duranta erecta (syn: Duranta repens). In the garden of blogger Diana Kirby (Sharing Nature's Garden). On the opposite side of the garden, in the front northwest section, is this mo...

Stimulating growth, one seed at a time. Wednesday, May 7, 2014. Spring harvest and garden friends. New" potatoes, "old" spinach - all so good! How do you like my makeshift spring cornucopia cobbled together from a cobalt blue plastic mixing bowl, a Fiestaware rice bowl, and a tea towel? Sure, there's a few holes and yellow spots in the spinach, but it tastes so fresh and sweet, and once it's sautéed up with garlic, no one will see the holes. I'll be sure to wash off the lizard spit. Plants you can eat.

And ended like this, on the East Austin Urban Farm Tour. In between, I caught these pretties blooming in my garden. It's warming up (high of 87 on Sunday! After a cool, damp spring, and the tropicals are starting to take off. The early-blooming roses are past their peak while the late bloomers have yet to get going. Visit May Dreams Gardens. Texas F...

Stimulating growth, one seed at a time. Sunday, August 3, 2014. Portland Garden Bloggers Fling - A Jam-Packed Day 1. Day 1 of the Portland Fling started out with breakfast and books at Timber Press Publishing. Can you tell we were excited to be there? Bloggers packed the offices, browsing the stacks, mingling with staff and each other, while noshing on bagels and fruit and sipping coffee and mimosas - quite the juggling act! From the publishing office, it was a short walk to Lan Su Chinese Garden. This b...

The Not So Big Garden: Springtime in the Fall
http://notsobiggarden.blogspot.com/2012/10/springtime-in-fall.html
The Not So Big Garden. Wednesday, October 31, 2012. Springtime in the Fall. An iris thinks it's Easter. And here are some updated pics of the dry creek bed I'm building. It's sort of on hold while we wait for the city's approval to build a little second residence in the back yard. Its plumbing may have to go right through where my creek is. A Turk's Cap, above. These grow like weeds here. Best in part shade. They hold up around a lot of child's play too. April 8, 2013 at 9:55 AM. Welcome to our Xeriscape.
The Not So Big Garden: Dry Creek Bed
http://notsobiggarden.blogspot.com/2012/01/dry-creek-bed.html
The Not So Big Garden. Friday, January 27, 2012. This was last fall. This was last December. I pulled up more grass, and just kept digging, so I have a depression at one end (the visual end of the creek) and the "creek" then going alongside our house. The creek bed's shape is being designed by our kids, as they discover where they like the water to go or not go. It will be a slow process, but I'm liking the joy I find in this slowness. The Not So Big Garden. Sunday, April 29, 2012. A friend gave me some winecups, these are called, at the start of Spring. Each plant bursts out of one point in the ground, and spreads out above in beautiful symmetry, one stalk remaining overhead. Just delightful. It's hard to capture the symmetry in a photo. It's like a little burst of pink fireworks. And of course I have to raise a toast to our annual sunflower visitors. Now at least 7 feet tall. Friday, April 13, 2012. We potted a poinsettia last Christ...
Rebecca’s Retreat: October 2014
http://rebeccasretreat.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
The Retreat in Progress. Sunday, October 19, 2014. It's been a while since I took out my camera and snapped a few photos of what has been going on at Rebecca's Retreat. I was inspired this morning while I was sitting on the deck drinking my coffee while cardinals and other flying friends were singing and enjoying the cool weather. What a nice place to sit and read a book by the Peggy Martin rose bush. The garden angel will look over you and make sure you don't sleep too long in that comfortable spot.

The Retreat in Progress. Sunday, March 23, 2014. Spring Cleaning - The Dirty Deck. I finally got up the motivation to start the inevitable spring cleaning around the yard. I don't like the maintenance, it is not fun, but it is necessary. Below are before and after pictures and the deck cleaner I used. Before deck cleaner. You can see where I pressure washed it and it just left streaks in the dirt. After deck cleaner and pressure washing. Made my job much easier. Links to this post. Welcome to my Retreat.

The Retreat in Progress. Sunday, May 24, 2015. The standoff between the cat and the squirrel has turned into a game of hide and seek. Links to this post. Sunday, May 10, 2015. I enjoy sitting on the deck in the backyard and anticipating what wonders of the day I will see. Will it be a lizard, a hummingbird, a cardinal, or something new? Links to this post. Saturday, May 9, 2015. Don't care for snakes of any kind. Now the peacocks were plentiful and beautiful. Links to this post. Tuesday, May 5, 2015.
Gardening at Draco: Ice Weed
http://dracogardens.blogspot.com/2015/03/ice-weed.html
A Hill Country Garden. Monday, March 2, 2015. I was beginning to think it wasn't going to get cold enough for the ice weed to "bloom". It is a great addition to the garden. Even though it's real blooms are not all that much to look at, they do attract a lot of different butterflies and the winter "blooms" are great. There is no end to the different shapes and swirls that they produce. I inspect them every year and am dazzled and amazed by their formations. March 2, 2015 at 7:54 AM. How cool is that?

The Shovel-Ready Garden
Stimulating growth, one seed at a time. Wednesday, April 15, 2015. Garden Bloggers Bloom Day - April 2015. Here's what's blooming in my Central Texas garden this April. In the vegetable garden, the potato plants are blooming. This is a sign that new potatoes will be ready to harvest in about three weeks. The red potatoes have purple flowers and the white potatoes have white flowers. The multiplying onions are also in bloom. They look fabulous en masse. While this one's more in keeping with the Old Masters.
