Zoe - Tales from Over the Horizon

Off the Beaten Track. Travel Thoughts and Advice. My experience of the Nepal Earthquake. It wasn’t nearly as dramatic as you might expect from the news. But the news focuses on the hot spots and misses the ordinary ending up rather narrow at times. I don’t mean to undermine the horror and destruction that many other people experienced in the Nepal Earthquake, but I was lucky enough that nothing was traumatic for me. At first I was completely blasé. Things shook, I was on the 4. The Little Town of Pingyao.

Off the Beaten Track. Travel Thoughts and Advice. Essential Preparation for Your Trip. Essential Preparation for Your Trip. How should you prepare for your trip? That is almost an impossible question to answer because every trip is different. Long term travelling or short-term trip? Harbin in winter or India in summer? France in the high season or Liberia which I don’t think has a season. Every trip requires something different. Filed Under: Packing and Planning. What to Pack in Your Travel Backpack?
Cultural Archives - Tales from Over the Horizon

Off the Beaten Track. Travel Thoughts and Advice. The Little Town of Pingyao. I had originally planned one night in Pingyao and several nights Taiyuan. I’m not quite sure why, but as I travelled down the country from Harbin I decided to extend my time in Pingyao and cut down my time in Taiyuan. I’m so glad I did. Pingyao is a great little place. It has so much character! The old town is surrounded by a standard sprawling modern city, but the old town is fully preserved with its walls intact.

Off the Beaten Track. Travel Thoughts and Advice. 2 Most Important Things to Stay Safe as a Solo Female Traveller. One of the biggest reasons people, and women especially, don’t travel solo, or in many cases don’t travel at all is that they are worried about how to stay safe. When I was planning to travel after university one of my friends kept on trying to be positive and talk about all the good things she’d heard about Beijing. It is a huge mental block for many people. Spoiled from Above - Maui by Helicopter - Hecktic Travels
http://www.hecktictravels.com/maui-helicopter
Work With Hecktic Travels. Words by Dalene Heck / Photography by Pete Heck. Less than two hours after landing at the Maui airport, we took off again. Could there be any more of a stunning introduction to a new destination than to survey it intimately from the air? Sarcasm I suppose it would do. This excursion may have single-handedly ruined all other destinations for us (at least on the introduction to a place). Our standards are now WAY high. How to do it. For the first portion of our stay on Maui.
Dispatch from Rwanda: Things to See & Do
http://alittleadrift.com/2014/06/rwanda-africa
Round the World Travel Blog. My Favorite Travel Quotes. A Little Adrift Dispatch from Africa: Rwanda and a Final Goodbye. I pen this now from a coffee shop at Nairobi International Airport, several hours out from the flight that will take me home, back to the United States and into a new journey over the summer months as I attend weddings, speak at conferences, and visit old friends. I am ready to leave. Is begging for me to return and scoop her up for some sort of adventure even a stateside adventure is...
Unforgettable Bonaire • Ordinary Traveler
http://ordinarytraveler.com/articles/bonaire-caribbean-island-travel
It’s been a long time since I’ve visited a destination where I had a hard time saying goodbye. While I loved Bologna. And thought Panama City Beach. Was stunning, I’m always happy to come home. For once, I had mixed feelings about leaving. I had experienced one of the best weeks of my life and leaving on Saturday was hard, despite knowing I was coming home to Scott and summer in my beloved San Diego. Was genuinely welcoming, instantly making me feel like we were old friends. Along with the friendly s...
Guachimontones Pyramids
http://artofadventuring.com/guachimontones-pyramids
April 12, 2014. About 45 minutes from the second largest city in Mexico are the Guachimontones Pyramids and appear to not be getting much attention at all. The site was discovered in 1970 but important research had only begun in 1996. It’s a relatively new site that doesn’t seem to be very popular despite it being a really cool place to visit. You can visit as part of a day trip from Guadalajara. We drove there with our rental car from CarRentals.co.uk. Unfortunately the Guachimontones Pyramids has no of...
My stay with the Himba tribe - The Wandering Orange
http://thewanderingorange.com/2015/06/05/himba-tribe
Love & Travel. The Traveler’s Curse. My stay with the Himba tribe. I watched as the brilliant red African sun rose over Zebra Mountain looming in the distance. The women of the village began singing, starting their daily routine of covering their skin with. And milking the goats, their lifeline out here in the harsh living conditions of Kaokoveld. I sat there, watching the beauty unfold around me, quietly trying to absorb that moment and hold it within, for just a second longer. Inspired, I gave myself t...

Round the World Travel Guide. 7 Tips On How To Crowdfund Your Travels. May 25, 2014. The following is a guest post by Francis Tapon. It sounds like an impossible dream: a bunch of people throw money at you so that you can travel around the world. However, it’s now easier than ever to travel the world. Planning your first trip around the world? Still, there were exceptions. For instance, I just read A Voyage Across the Americas. However, my favorite is the Duke of the Abruzzi. You probably were taught tha...

Love & Travel. The Traveler’s Curse. Chasing the Light; Photography in Namibia. Africa has always called to me, since I was a little girl I dreamed of traveling to where my father was born. Scuba Diving the Great Barrier Reef
http://thewanderingorange.com/2014/07/01/scuba-diving-the-great-barrier-reef
Love & Travel. The Traveler’s Curse. Scuba Diving the Great Barrier Reef. I am not the same having seen the moon shine on the other side of the world. Our first dive was Tracy’s Bommie at Milln Reef. Irish gave us a quick refresher course in scuba diving. It had been over a year since I went diving in Thailand, and I was a bit rusty. After a few minutes debriefing the dive site, we strapped on our scuba diving equipment and jumped in! He busily munched away at the coral while we swam with him, taking pho...

Live From Here (Episode 2): Jalal-abad, Kyrgyzstan. Live From Here (Episode 2): Jalal-abad, Kyrgyzstan. April 30, 2014. Welcome to the second episode of Wandering Earl: Live From Here. My new video series. Here’s a little background for this next episode. When I entered the first building I came across, I simply asked the woman at the reception desk, ‘. Is this the spa? She smiled and picked up the phone, calling over the only English-speaking staff member on the premises. It was quite a day. And onc...

Tales From Out In The 1960s Be-Bop Night
Tales From Out In The 1960s Be-Bop Night. This blog came into existence based on a post originally addressed to a fellow younger worker who was clueless about the "beats" of the 1950s and their stepchildren, the "hippies" of the 1960s, two movements that influenced me considerably in those days. Any and all essays, thoughts, or half-thoughts about this period in order to "enlighten" our younger co-workers and to preserve our common cultural history are welcome, very welcome. Tales from Oysterland
Tales from the tube strike. January 10, 2017. Witnessed: excellent trolling by the busker under Blackfriars Bridge, playing an especially dreary version of Radiohead's Karma Police, as London's crestfallen commuters trudged through the rain-soaked misery of 2017's first tube strike. A drunkard tries to get home. February 17, 2016. The drunkard is me. I get on the Bakerloo line and like a total amateur I fall asleep. The tubes haven’t stopped running and I can just go back the way I came. I head back to t...

Note: This is NOT the. Website of the world's. His official web site. Welcome to Tales from Oz. Welcome to my little place on the Net. If you're reading this, I have succeeded to some extent. Nose around, there's something here for everyone: some fiction. And a lot of commentary. Oh yeah and by all means, feel free to send your comments.
