Though many scholars believe Tannat originated in the Basque region, Tannat is most closely associated with the winemaking region of Madiran, at the foothills of the Pyrenees Mountains in southwestern France. The new two acres…. The wee little vines we planted last July are still small. We will remove the grow tubes, cut the vines back to two buds, replace the grow tubes, and when any chance of frost has passed, will again remove the grow tubes for good. Dave has been working on tilling under the prunings left behind. He will prepare to spray the weeds with pre-and post-emergent. Spring is a busy time. Accent theme by Handsome Code. Here is the Cab. Vine after pruning. We left five spurs, with three buds on each spur. Usually two buds are left on each spur, but in anticipation of a predicted, very cold April, we leave three. If we have a freeze, leaving an extra bud, gives us a better chance of a crop. Dave and I estimated we EACH snipped 30,000 times, across 38 rows, with 88 vines in each row.
