Using film versions to make literature accessible? | Joys and woes of teaching English

https://teachinglanguageliterature.wordpress.com/2013/08/15/using-film-versions-to-make-literature-accessible

Joys and woes of teaching English. Ramblings of a well-worn teacher. A personal touch…. Fahrenheit 451 – Far out! Using film versions to make literature accessible? August 15, 2013. The other day I heard that next year there will be a film version of Markus Zusak’s. So, what do I do? My initial response is: take it off the book list for next year. What literary value does the film hold though? The other one that springs to mind is complexity; let’s look specifically at sequencing in this regard. A person...

When they just don’t switch on… | Joys and woes of teaching English

Joys and woes of teaching English. Ramblings of a well-worn teacher. The frustration of extra-curricular activities →. When they just don’t switch on…. March 24, 2012. Languages are fascinating subjects to teach. The animation that one sees on students’ faces when they know they have something to say, something that’s important, something they’ve just discovered and the light bulb has just switched on inside the brain and has lit up the whole face – I love those moments. But they don’t always happen.

Joys and woes of teaching English. Ramblings of a well-worn teacher. Monthly Archives: March 2013. A personal touch…. March 28, 2013. Students often struggle to discover why they are not succeeding in English. This is despite receiving multiple assignments back with comments and tick boxes seemingly indicating what is wrong. It is as if there has to be a moment of … Continue reading →. Fahrenheit 451 – Far out! Using film versions to make literature accessible? A personal touch…. Blog at WordPress.com.

The frustration of extra-curricular activities | Joys and woes of teaching English

Joys and woes of teaching English. Ramblings of a well-worn teacher. When they just don’t switch on…. A personal touch… →. The frustration of extra-curricular activities. March 26, 2012. It’s that time of the term when there are camps and excursions and who knows what else which teachers are required to organise and supervise. Next week I shall spend three days watching high school students play golf, bowls and other games and check that they behave themselves. Is this more a waste of my time or theirs?

On the separation of church and state | The Ruminating Ox

Reflections on life, theology and faith. On Burning the Koran. They were singing… →. On the separation of church and state. September 21, 2010. John Smyth, a key Baptist founder, proposed that a “magistrate is not by vertue [sic.] of his office to meddle with religion, or matters of conscience, to force and compell men to this or that form of religion, or doctrine: but to leave Christian religion free, to every man’s conscience, and to handle only civil transgressions. In Romans 13, Paul notes that all a...

Reflections on life, theology and faith. Luke 9 – The benefit and the cost of following Jesus →. May 23, 2011. But and this is a big but we cannot merely think of the church as an abstract she . For while all of the things said above are true of the church as an institution, we need to recall that the church consists of none other than ourselves. Are the bride of Christ. Darkness | The Ruminating Ox

https://theruminatingox.wordpress.com/2010/12/24/darkness

Reflections on life, theology and faith. The church →. December 24, 2010. Tomorrow is Christmas, and I’m preaching from Isaiah 8:20-9:7. A truly wonderful passage. In my preparations, I tried to capture something of the good news in some poetry. I think there’s an interesting rhythm to what I’ve come up with. It’s probably not ready to share yet, but here goes anyway! Hanging deep upon the soul. Of the world;. Of those who claim strength. To be all they need by themselves. Mocking desperate hungry souls.

Reflections on life, theology and faith. A return to blogging →. Luke 9 – The benefit and the cost of following Jesus. September 30, 2011. A new thought for the blog: I’m going to be writing some thoughts on passages of Scripture…. These are just my own musings and thinkings – what’s your opinion? Luke 9 is an interesting chapter to read. It starts with Jesus giving his disciples authority and power to cast out. Demons and to heal. Notice, it wasn’t just. That Jesus gave them – but also. The power of the...

Reflections on life, theology and faith. A return to blogging. Without You →. On same sex marriage. August 20, 2013. With the Australian election around the corner, one of the issues that has been raised by the incumbent PM is that of gay marriage (which, for some reason, is being spruiked as marriage equality ). I think Skye Jethani is right arguing that the church dropped the ball on this way back in the 70s when no-fault divorce was introduced. The most important thing in the world? Matthew 19:27-29 s...

August 20, 2013. Found this old poem languishing as a draft from 2010. It’s not particularly brilliant (in fact it is absolutely AWFUL), but here it comes from the “Drafts” graveyard! When Christians Disagree | The Ruminating Ox

https://theruminatingox.wordpress.com/2010/10/21/when-christians-disagree

Reflections on life, theology and faith. They were singing…. October 21, 2010. Last night, I was reading through John 13 – John’s account of the last supper. Towards the end of that chapter, Jesus tells his disciples once again that he is about to go to the Father. And in light of that, verse 34, he commands them to love each other they way he loved them. Because that love would prove to the world that they were his disciples. When Christians disagree, we are reminded that we are sinners saved by grace&#...

Joys and woes of teaching English | Ramblings of a well-worn teacher

Joys and woes of teaching English. Ramblings of a well-worn teacher. Fahrenheit 451 – Far out! August 21, 2013. For the past five weeks we have been engaged in the provocative world of Ray Bradbury’s. And it has been the most rewarding and engaging five weeks of the year for most of my 16 year old students. Once we had read the book and looked at the characters, and at the more obvious themes, done some close reading, as one does, that’s when the conversation started! How and why do they happen? My initi...
