Monday, August 4, 2014. Monday Made It: Operations and Properties. I'm a little late to the party, but I thought I'd link up with 4th Grade Frolics. I made this PowerPoint of arithmetic operations and properties. (Am I the only one whose middle schoolers always ask "which way does the division go? If you want the files, you can get them here. Teaching with Borrowed Wisdom: Made it Monday: Divisibility PowerPoint
http://teachingwithborrowedwisdom.blogspot.com/2014/08/made-it-monday-divisibility-powerpoint.html
Monday, August 11, 2014. Made it Monday: Divisibility PowerPoint. I taught the divisibility rules last year, but I don't think the kids really got them. I have had them memorized since fifth grade, but I never understood how they worked. So I did a little internet research. The videos at artofproblemsolving.com finally cleared up the confusion. The Spectacular World Of Secondary Math: March 2015
http://secondarymathshop.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html
The Spectacular World Of Secondary Math. Saturday, March 21, 2015. Branching Out on Social Media. While I am not anti-technology, I usually prefer face to face contact (or at least voice-to-voice on the phone)! That being said, I realize that I live in the year 2015 and that a social media presence is a necessary means by which to communicate. The odd looks I get from my students when I ask what something is, lead me to do some research and get educated on social media! But also on Twitter. Writing probl...

Teaching with Borrowed Wisdom: June 2015
http://teachingwithborrowedwisdom.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html
Thursday, June 18, 2015. 2 years ago, I had Coach come in and talk about sports statistics. I didn't do that last year, but I'll have to make it a priority again- -it was fun for everyone and gave a little non-math-class context for what we were doing. After the cpm materials, I'll use the textbook problems, along with analyzing real data. (Last year, we looked at some stats from the students' home countries. In a fourteen-student class, we had 8 nationalities represented! Labels: first day prep. I'm not...

Teaching with Borrowed Wisdom: 2014-2015 Reflections
http://teachingwithborrowedwisdom.blogspot.com/2015/06/2014-2015-reflections.html
Saturday, June 6, 2015. I haven't blogged since last summer. I thought I would share a few of my reflections from this year. On Thursdays, I usually gave a devotion that either tied in with Wednesday's chapel or with the season of year- -or both. I plan to continue doing this, unless next year's class is more eager to volunteer to lead devotions. Next year, I'm teaching Science 7, Science 8, and Math 10. If anyone has suggestions for these classes, I'd love to hear them! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Teaching with Borrowed Wisdom: 5 TES Resources to use this year

Saturday, August 2, 2014. 5 TES Resources to use this year. My principal asked me to read and summarize 5 TES Resources about math and classroom management over the summer as part of my professional growth plan (Yes, I have an awesome principal). I figured I might as well put it in a blog post. Http:/ www.tes.co.uk/teaching-resource/Behaviour-Management-Strategies-6288625/. Classroom Behavior Management Toolkit. Teaching with Borrowed Wisdom: On Taking Math Class Outside
http://teachingwithborrowedwisdom.blogspot.com/2014/08/on-taking-math-class-outside.html
Thursday, August 21, 2014. On Taking Math Class Outside. Some people seem to believe that math class should always involve students quietly sitting at desks, working with pencil and paper on problems out of the textbook. This sort of lesson is a useful tool, but it can get boring if that's all you do, day after day. Transformations: Kids made various shapes on the basketball court and then I gave them either a vector translation (for geometric shapes), or a changed equation (for graphs of parabolas).
