Teach Social First: January 2012

http://www.teachsocialfirst.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html

Tuesday, January 31, 2012. Some of the Teach Social First strategies are being used to help a struggling 1st grade class with several students on Tier plans. For more about TSF and the RtI connection, click here. Students on Tier plans (6 total) were given a goal to keep their brains and bodies in the group. If they met their goal (individual data sheets for each student) then they got to have a Superflex lunch with me or Ms Ginny. Mr Mouth was a hit, and I hope the lunch was too. Teach Social First: class challenge reflections

http://www.teachsocialfirst.blogspot.com/2012/03/class-challenge-reflections.html

Wednesday, March 28, 2012. I blogged a while back about some earlier reflections with our class challenges. For more on that post, click here. 10 of the 13 classes have completed 6 of the challenges and have earned the extra specials class (art, music or PE). To hear the students talk about the special activities they have gotten to do has been priceless! And, the extra special time gives the classroom teacher some extra planning time. So actually both the teacher and the students are being rewarded.

Teach Social First: Wings: A Thinkable

http://www.teachsocialfirst.blogspot.com/2012/04/wings-thinkable.html

Tuesday, April 17, 2012. It is hard to believe that next week will be our last lesson. Ginny and I have learned so much during our pilot program and have had a blast teaching students to be "Thinking About Others" kids. I really cannot imagine doing anything more rewarding. Lesson 12 is about a Thinkable Named Wings. We are using the book Don’t Slam the Door. I love the idea of ending our lessons with a Thinkable. It really speaks to what our program is all about. Teach Social First: The Classroom Challenge

http://www.teachsocialfirst.blogspot.com/2011/09/classroom-challenges.html

Monday, September 19, 2011. Each Teach Social First lesson includes a classroom challenge. Teachers are charged with catching students practicing the concept introduced. For the first lesson, the concept is being a "thinking about others" kid. The classroom challenge is a great way for students to be directly reinforced for using the strategies taught. And, the class has to work together to spell the classroom challenge phrase. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Http:/ www.teachsocialfirst.com/.

http://shimpifamily.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html

Tuesday, January 31, 2012. The kids got 2nd quarter report cards yesterday and there were some surprises. Samantha has been, and will always be, a good student. She is reading a year above grade level, and she is the family math genius! She is a girl that loves school. Aidan had some surprises as well. He is reading at almost a 4th grade level (as a 2nd grader! Sunday, January 29, 2012. Fireball and supervised probation. The Shimpi Family: best buddies

http://shimpifamily.blogspot.com/2012/04/best-buddies.html

Sunday, April 15, 2012. The kids have been getting along really well these days. They have had multiple sleepovers during spring break, hanging out a ton, etc. Samantha begged to have another sleepover in Aidan's room tonight. I explained that she had to go to bed by 8pm because tomorrow is a school day (Aidan's bedtime is a bit later). She kept her promise as evidenced by the photo below. The Shimpi Family: waiting, waiting, and a new friend

http://shimpifamily.blogspot.com/2012/04/waiting-waiting-and-new-friend.html

Monday, April 09, 2012. Waiting, waiting, and a new friend. He spent the rest of the day casting with various fake bait and the few minnows that were still alive trying to catch the "big one.". Aidan used Rahul's pocketknife to cut him in half (I could not do it) and we had our bait. I watched 3 fishing poles for most of the afternoon. fishing is sooooo boring! It is 7:45pm as I write this post, and know that I am going down one last time to check my poles.crossing my fingers for a catfish! Waiting, wait...

Saturday, December 31, 2011. New Year's Eve hike. It was 65 degrees today, so an outdoor activity was on the agenda! We hiked the trails in Briar Chapel for over an hour. The kids were rock stars with their hiking sticks. I cannot think of a better way to end 2011! Thursday, December 29, 2011. Fireball the famous kitten and double sleepover. And, sure enough there was Fireball on the front page. Here is Fireball's print debut -. Aidan and Noah plotting the night's fun:. Sophie's mood ring was also a hit&...

The Shimpi Family: more great report cards

http://shimpifamily.blogspot.com/2012/04/more-great-report-cards.html

Friday, April 06, 2012. More great report cards. We got report cards this week for the 3rd 9-week grading period. It is hard to believe there is only one more grading period for 1st and 2nd grade at our house. Lets start with Samantha: above grade level in reading and math, no areas that need improvement. She has always loved to read and write, but she has turned into a math wiz this school year. She is so proud that she can read "chapter books" all by herself. Aidan was most proud of the fact that he ha...

The Shimpi Family: Fireball the mischievous kitten

http://shimpifamily.blogspot.com/2012/04/fireball-mischievous-kitten.html

Tuesday, April 03, 2012. Fireball the mischievous kitten. Fireball has been quite the mischievous kitten these days. First, the incident with the flying thing that stung him in the eye (his follow up appt to check his cornea is Thursday after school). Next, he discovered the aquarium. At first he sat and looked at the fish with his tail swishing back and forth. So, here is Fireball as I tried to lure him outside of his invisible fence. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Tuesday, April 10, 2012. Lake-ation comes to an end. I was super sad to leave the lake house today. But, I know what everyone. Is eagerly awaiting is a fish update :-) Sadly I have to report that I did not catch any catfish last night. This is what I found at the dock this morning. Yep, both poles GONE. Wednesday, April 18, 2012. New door and fresh greens. Our front door has not worked properly in a while. Also, the last time it was stained the painters let it drip at the bottom. So, we decided to upgrade while we had folks here building the workshop. Check out the before and after pic. For dinner tonight we had some fresh greens from the garden: arugula and red lettuce. Super yummy! They look good now and what a fresh greens! Http:/ painters.in-bromley-area.co.uk/. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Social Learning

Sunday, June 9, 2013. I start the school year with a lesson on listening. Anytime I start a new group or have a new student, I start with this as well. These are the main concepts I teach:. Listening is a classroom expectation. We show that we care about others when we listen. Active listening includes thinking about what the person is saying. Listening is an important job. We use our ears to hear, but use many other parts of our body to truly listen. We use listening so that we can learn. 1 "Is this bod...
