Monthly Archives: December 2012. December 19, 2012 · 1:08 am. Home challenges: lessons from students and teachers. With lesson 6 we introduce Collider – the Unthinkable that makes kids interrupt. As we were talking about the home challenge for the lesson, a student gave us some really good feedback to make it better. Our plan was for students to put the steps to defeat Collider in order:. The student asked if he could cut out the steps and put them in order. Duh! Check back and see. We introduce all of o...

Monthly Archives: September 2012. September 25, 2012 · 1:24 pm. Ginny and I provided the new teachers with an overview of our program last week. We were both disappointed by the low turn out from teachers and administrators, but something good did come from our presentation! To defeat Chatterbox, remember that being part of a group means that your eyes, ears, body, brain, hands AND MOUTH all have to be working together to stay in the group. Follow Blog via Email. Monthly Archives: November 2012. November 29, 2012 · 10:42 pm. The waiting is the hardest part…. I feel like Tom Petty, I really do. Remember that song….The Waiting? The waiting is the hardest part…. that song could be my anthem right now. Ginny and I submitted our manuscript to Social Thinking Publications in early August, and we are still waiting for feedback. The hardest part (other than the waiting, haha) is being new to the whole book publishing process. Is this typical? Sadly, I could go on.

Friday, September 30, 2011. We had lots of "home challenges" returned this week. Some are displayed on the Superflex bulletin board in the main hallway. Check it out -. Since all of the home challenges could not be displayed, we wanted to figure out a way to reward all students for their efforts. The solution: Superflex stickers! The bulletin board also has a tips section for each lesson. Just another way to remind students and teachers what we are working on! Wednesday, September 28, 2011. Being a think...

Tuesday, January 31, 2012. Some of the Teach Social First strategies are being used to help a struggling 1st grade class with several students on Tier plans. For more about TSF and the RtI connection, click here. Students on Tier plans (6 total) were given a goal to keep their brains and bodies in the group. If they met their goal (individual data sheets for each student) then they got to have a Superflex lunch with me or Ms Ginny. Mr Mouth was a hit, and I hope the lunch was too. Friday, March 30, 2012. I had an impromptu interview with a 1st and 3rd grader yesterday after school. Ginny and I have been talking about doing a parent and teacher survey, but it dawned on me as I was talking to these students that we should also consider doing some formal interviews with some students. Here is what I learned:. Now she knows that she needs to Ask about the problem. Wednesday, March 28, 2012. And, the extra special time gives the classroom teacher some extra planning time. Wednesday, February 29, 2012. Lesson 9 - the Friendship Way. We are doing 3 lessons around problem solving, mainly because we feel like this is a huge part of learning to be a "Thinking About Others" kid. So many problems come up in an ordinary school day, in lots of different variations, with different kinds of people. To sum it up: problem solving can be tough for elementary-aged students. By, Mo Williams to talk about "more than me" problems. Super excited about this lesson! Thursday, February 23, 2012.

Social Learning
Sunday, June 9, 2013. I start the school year with a lesson on listening. Anytime I start a new group or have a new student, I start with this as well. These are the main concepts I teach:. Listening is a classroom expectation. We show that we care about others when we listen. Active listening includes thinking about what the person is saying. Listening is an important job. We use our ears to hear, but use many other parts of our body to truly listen. We use listening so that we can learn. 1 "Is this bod...
