On tools for animation and cartooning. I’ve seen early uses of frame buffers and digitizing tablets back when these were highly specialized and expensive equipment. The Tech Curmudgeon: January 2015

http://www.techcurmudgeon.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

Wednesday, January 28, 2015. Here in Boston, we’re in the aftermath of the latest nor’easter, the biggest snowstorm since the bigger one two years ago. Posted by Peter Davis. Links to this post. Monday, January 26, 2015. There’s little doubt that the selfie. Is the runaway popular “art” form of the age. In 2013, the Oxford Dictionaries chose “selfie” as their Word of the Year. And like all successful fads, selfies have spun off accessory products like the selfie stick, and even a TV show. No American sho...

The Tech Curmudgeon: July 2014

http://www.techcurmudgeon.com/2014_07_01_archive.html

Thursday, July 31, 2014. Years ago, I read an article in Scientific American. About the benefits of transcendental meditation. The main one, as I recall, is that you could get away with less sleep. Twenty minutes of TM would make up for a few hours of lost sleep. Perfect for the young party animal I imagined myself to be. The other main benefit of TM was that the Beatles were doing it. Of course, I had to try this, with the predictable results I later described in this poem …. I am clearing my mind.

The Tech Curmudgeon: December 2014

http://www.techcurmudgeon.com/2014_12_01_archive.html

Wednesday, December 31, 2014. Happy New Year, 2015! No problem. Get a Fit-Wit! But you know what? Personally, 2014 was one of the worst years of my life, in the same league as 2013 and 1978. It, frankly, sucked. 8221; just doesn’t sound as catchy. Besides, there are over 9 billion cycles per second, so you’d have to say it really fast. Posted by Peter Davis. Links to this post. Monday, December 29, 2014. Time Bums - Epilogue. Posted by Peter Davis. Links to this post. Wednesday, December 24, 2014. In fac...

Monday, July 20, 2015. May be sung to the tune of “Beauty School Dropout” from. Our story’s sad to tell,. Handbaskets bound for hell. We squander all the gifts we should embrace. Our future’s so unclear now. The thing we have to fear now. Is what we’re doing to the human race. All evidence suggests I’m right. As a species, we’re none too bright. Though for centuries quite violently we’ve lost daughters and sons. There are still those who believe the way to safety is more guns. To drive the SUV. People ar...

The Tech Curmudgeon: Taxonometrics?

http://www.techcurmudgeon.com/2009/03/taxonometrics.html

Tuesday, March 3, 2009. The challenge lies in consuming. Specifically, in selecting what to consume. Web surfers are confronted by vast landscapes of everything ranging from strident political rants to pictures of lolcats. And everything in between. Or as someone (? Once said, "Everything you might want to know is on the Internet, but not in alphabetical order.". So how do we make sense of this? The current term of art is ranking. To describe the measurement of taxonomies. It fits semantically, and I...

Ideas Great and Dumb: Checks and Balances

http://www.ideasgreatanddumb.com/2008/10/checks-and-balances.html

Wednesday, October 8, 2008. The famous Lord Acton remarked, quite astutely,. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Government structures that follow this principle. Make sure that no single branch is invincible. No one branch gets to have all of its druthers. Each one must answer to one or more others. The whole legislature can pass lots of laws. But courts overturn them if they find some flaws. Some chief executives make their own moves,. But some acts require that the Congress approves. By subscribing to...

From My Mind To The Written and Printed Word. Just a Bit About Me. October 10, 2011. I’m not surprised that Netflix had to renege on their proposal to divide its disc rental website with their file downloading site (named Qwikster). Customers hated itand whybecause things were working just fine for them. There was no need to divide Netflix’s offerings for the customer. So why did Netflix propose this? Why do I say less? Not everyone has fast Internet access. A cheap DVD rental plan is under $10 and c...

Thursday, July 31, 2008. On another blog, I wrote a post about Gaussian blur. And what it actually means. This is a pretty widely used function in Photoshop, so I thought it would be useful to describe what's actually going on at the pixel level. Rather than repeat all this, I'll just include the link:. Thursday, November 20, 2014. After rhapsodizing about the joys of the recumbent trike last week, I thought I should at least show you the vehicle in question. Above is my current year-round commuter, complete with retractable fabric top ( Veltop. And windshield for all-weather use. It may look hokey, but it does actually keep me dry. It's like driving a big umbrella around. Beneath that top is a 2013 Catrike Villager. With the 26" rear wheel upgrade from Utah Trikes. Thursday, November 13, 2014. They&#82...

Tuesday, May 27, 2014. Gearing Up for Winter. In the Spring, a young man's fancy lightly turns to thoughts of winter biking. Or at least, mine do, though I'm neither young nor fancy. I did, however, endure a long, nasty winter here in the Boston area. There was no one single cataclysmic storm, but lots and lots of small storms, repeatedly slathering the bike paths with snow, and bringing plenty of rain, sleet, wind and other goodies. I know I boasted about my winter commuter bike. Other Blogs of Note.
