The Occasional Recipe: Christmas Bells Are Ringing

Friday, December 21, 2012. Christmas Bells Are Ringing. I'm not feeling very much like sharing right now but I have to do something to cheer myself up. This morning I lost my oldest and dearest pet, my cat Nimbus. It wasn't unexpected, but it was traumatic for all of us. Especially since we lost the pet bunny, Pfeffer, last week. So here's a recipe for some delicious Christmas cookies. You can make this with just about any jam but pay attention to the lemon extract/peel and substitute if needed. 4 Bake i...

The Occasional Recipe: June 2013
http://occasionalrecipe.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html
Sunday, June 2, 2013. The Modified Fuzzy Navel, or "MFN", was created by my father-in-law. It's very simple to make, but it packs a powerful punch - similar to Long Island Tea in that it sneaks up on you. Enjoy, but in moderation! 2 shots vodka (use good vodka for the best flavor). 1 shot Peachtree Schnapps. Cherry and orange slice, for garnish (optional). Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). I have three blogs. That Little Farm Stand. I started writing about farming in my This n That. I love to read, ride my m...

This 'n That: Ladybug, Ladybug, Fly Away - Home??
http://thisnthat46.blogspot.com/2011/11/ladybug-ladybug-fly-away-home.html
Writings on learning to be farmers, mostly, but musings as well. November 16, 2011. Ladybug, Ladybug, Fly Away - Home? Ladybugs are what's called "beneficial insects". To us farmers, anyway. They're carnivores - they eat nasty, crop-destroying bugs called "aphids", among others. (I think aphids are cute - they're bright springtime green, and really funny-looking, but.) The more ladybugs around, the safer our crops will be. That means organic fertilizers and no. Before you say Ewwww! Let me say that we'll...

Writings on learning to be farmers, mostly, but musings as well. January 06, 2013. Software Review: AnVir Task Manager 7.0.4. I don't generally post software reviews because what works for me won't necessarily work for you. And I've stayed away from this kind of program in the past, mostly because I'm afraid I'll muck up my system by stopping or preventing something that's necessary. (I did that once with CCleaner, what a mess. Not the program's fault.). Site where you can watch a video on how to use the...

Writings on learning to be farmers, mostly, but musings as well. December 18, 2012. Good heavens. I'm not much of a writer if I let my blog go for over a year without a post, am I? But we shall persevere. The planning for 2013 is underway. I'm having fun with my seed catalogs, and my wish list is HUGE. Gotta cut it down or I'll be over budget (and we'll be overextended in caring for the plants! Here are some of the things we learned last year:. Weed and grass control is absolutely critical. We laid out t...

The Occasional Recipe: A Caramel Freak's Caramel Pie
http://occasionalrecipe.blogspot.com/2012/12/a-caramel-freaks-caramel-pie.html
Wednesday, December 19, 2012. A Caramel Freak's Caramel Pie. I came across a can of sweetened, condensed milk in the pantry today. It transported me back to the old days when my mother would make Caramel Pie. She made the filling by putting an unopened can of sweetened, condensed milk into a pot of water and BOILING IT over low heat for 3 hours. Wow I have no idea why those cans didn't just explode. Talk about dangerous! Eagle Brand Caramel Pie. 1 can Eagle Brand sweetened, condensed milk (lowfat? Subscr...

This 'n That: Daylight Savings and Crazy Cows
http://thisnthat46.blogspot.com/2011/11/aargh-we.html
Writings on learning to be farmers, mostly, but musings as well. November 04, 2011. Daylight Savings and Crazy Cows. Spring forward, fall back. We won't actually lose an hour when daylight savings time goes away this weekend but it's going to feel like it anyway. I'm going to be ready for bed at 9 instead of 10, and ye Gods I'll probably wake up at 4:30 instead of 5:30. Everybody (except farmers) knows that 4:30 isn't morning, it's the middle of the night! So we'd know when to do it? Anyway, we didn't us...

The Occasional Recipe: Steak and Boursin-Wrapped Bells
http://occasionalrecipe.blogspot.com/2012/12/steak-and-boursin-wrapped-bells.html
Tuesday, December 11, 2012. Steak and Boursin-Wrapped Bells. It seems like there are a zillion vegetarian/vegan appetizers out there, and not too many that incorporate meat. I like meat, so here's one for all of you carnivores like me. It's great as part of a finger food buffet or as an appetizer. And it only takes 10 minutes to make. I'd love to attribute this recipe, but I don't remember where I found it. If it's yours, please let me know! 1 cup light Boursin cheese, divided. I started writing about fa...
