The Gardener's Rest

The vaguely green-fingered thoughts of a rambling rose. Rambling Rose - That would be me. The Man that Can - Hubby. Toad - Elder Son. Bumble Bee - Younger Son. Gardening together in South Yorkshire, UK. Fancy Rambling a little further? Busy Beez Gardening Club. The Man That Can and Bumblebee had an away day. Since it was such a beautiful day I thought I would get cracking on cutting back and clearing away for autumn. I had clean forgotten I had bought a pink daylily! What a delightful surprise. First off...

The Gardener's Rest: October 2014

http://www.thegardenersrest.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

The vaguely green-fingered thoughts of a rambling rose. Despite it being the last days of October, it's still extremely mild. This has its up sides along with its down sides. An up side is the warm damp soil is still very workable to get in shrubs and bulbs for next year. It is helping a fair few plants hold on to blooms that wee bit longer before the bite of the first frosts cut them down. The stag horn tree is on fire. Better captured with the evening sunlight, but today we're not so lucky. And finally...

The Gardener's Rest: August 2014

http://www.thegardenersrest.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

The vaguely green-fingered thoughts of a rambling rose. There's a change in the air. It is mid August, but it feels like autumn is fast approaching. There's a fresher feeling in the mornings and the nights are beginning to draw in. So many things need ticking off our gardening 'to do' list. Since today was dry, it was a good opportunity to get the deck spruced up. A stiff brush and a stiff breeze spurred us on. The apples are ripening well but they don't yet seem as big as last year. First job for me (he...

The Gardener's Rest: February 2015

http://www.thegardenersrest.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html

The vaguely green-fingered thoughts of a rambling rose. It's all about the buds. This evergreen clematis seems to have done well so far through the winter and is now putting on new growth. We planted it late last year so perhaps this year we will be able to train it to cover the framework we have created around the water butts. Not the best of shots, but buds are making themselves known on the largest of the hydrangeas in the front garden. There are buds on the other two, smaller hydrangeas too. Around t...

The Gardener's Rest: January 2015

http://www.thegardenersrest.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

The vaguely green-fingered thoughts of a rambling rose. Or rather faded greens and browns. On Boxing Day we had quite an amount of snow which stuck around til New Year's Day. Then came the winds. The first battering came and went with little disruption to the garden. The second time round we were not so lucky and lost part of the fence in the front garden. We will need to replace the whole run. In the raised bed, tiny crimson shoots are emerging from Bumblebee's rhubarb crown. With one exception. Win...

The Gardener's Rest: Taking stock

http://www.thegardenersrest.blogspot.com/2015/08/taking-stock.html

The vaguely green-fingered thoughts of a rambling rose. It's that time of the year again; time to see what has worked and what hasn't in the summer garden. It's also a good idea to see what jobs need doing come the autumn. First off the deck. It's so in need of being replaced as the whole thing is rotting - the sound of the wood splintering under foot is unnerving. The pond has been a great success. A frog has taken up residence and the plants in and around are doing well. The bed below is lacking in wow...

secrets on a slope: Allotment Visit 3

http://secretsonaslope.blogspot.com/2011/11/allotment-visit-3.html

Secrets on a slope. Wednesday, November 30, 2011. Today was a nice day down on the allotment as I got to meet some of the others who have been gardening there for years. It took me almost as long to clear the little patch behind the cleared one as it was jam packed full of grass and thistles. A new cold frame was added too. Just need some garlic now. Cold frame ready for some garlic. Weed clearing in failing light. Pond to be removed. Wednesday, November 30, 2011. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

secrets on a slope: July 2010

http://secretsonaslope.blogspot.com/2010_07_01_archive.html

Secrets on a slope. Wednesday, July 21, 2010. Currently sizzling on the hob. We grow good onions. Don't know how - but they like us and we like them. Especially in a little butter. We've been so busy with work and the baby that the garden is looking a little neglected. But we've a long holiday coming up - so it is high time we dusted down the spade and got back to it! Secrets on a slope. Tuesday, July 05, 2011. Bilberries are early this year. I have been keeping my eye on them and they are one sunny spell from sweet perfection. Anyhow. today I decided to pick some leaves and make some tea. One tray of leaves at 75°C (electric fan oven) for hour. One heaped teaspoon steeped for 5 minutes. A surprisingly good taste! Secrets on a slope. Sunday, April 24, 2011. I took the ginger biscuit recipe, took out the ginger and went all butter. The results are great. I measured each ball of the mixture to 20g a piece and they were ready after 8 minutes in a fully preheated fan oven. The edited version of the recipe is below. Give it a go! 8 oz (220g) flour, 2 cups. 2 teaspoons baking powder. 4 oz (110 g) butter, 1/2 cup. 4 oz (110 g) sugar, 2 cups. 1 Sift the flour and baking powder into a bowl. http://secretsonaslope.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html

Secrets on a slope. Wednesday, June 16, 2010. In the spirit of. Making the best of what we've got' I decided to do a little research about our soil to nip a developing soil-envy in the bud! Visiting family in the south I was so impressed by the beautiful soil they have (and take for granted). It is crumbly, brown, soft and everything seems to grow so well (including the weeds - ha ha! It seems to be everything that soil should be. So what is good about it? Wednesday, June 16, 2010. Thursday, June 10, 2010.

http://secretsonaslope.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html

Secrets on a slope. Monday, September 20, 2010. I visited a tree tonight that I have had my eye on for a while. Got everything I could without a ladder whilst in the dark. I now have around 5lb of crab apples. what to do with them? On flickr. If I can get some tasty hawthorn berries then I might go for this recipe. I feel this weekend will involve some serious jar sterilisation. Monday, September 20, 2010. Wednesday, September 15, 2010. I recently looked for a few extra spools that hold thread under the ...

Secrets on a slope. Monday, May 09, 2011. On Sunday I ended up at a Farmers' Market and bought the scrag end of the mushroom sellers wares on the cheap. Cooked slowly in some butter and a drop of oil. Finally a dash of the milk top for some creamy sauce. Served on a couple of slices of pan toasted spelt and honey bread. Monday, May 09, 2011.
