2016 – The Sixties Made Me
https://thesixtiesmademe.com/tag/2016
The Sixties Made Me. Music, Mods and Politics on a 1960s Essex council estate. It’s nearly Christmas. The snow isn’t snowing, the wind isn’t particularly blowing (not down here in the South, anyway), though at this time of the year there’s always a bit of a storm. But what better way to weather the storm than by listening to the Phil Spector Christmas Album and singing along at full volume as you queue to get out of the car park at the supermarket. Into the warm light of day. Come to the events, laughed ...

The Sixties Made Me. Music, Mods and Politics on a 1960s Essex council estate. Unexpected and best Christmas present – a record player! A couple of bars of ‘I fought the law,’ or even ‘Jailhouse Rock’ could have melted the heart of many a judge. I notice (only now, because he was not in my time) that there is a song by Jackson Browne called ‘ Lawyers in Love. In my dreams. *. Those of you who watched the BBC documentary Living in ’66 – Pop, pirates and postmen. Meanwhile, that afternoon Sandra and I went...

Life on the left bank. May 30, 2016. Arts and Metiers loosely translates as Arts and Crafts, but the Museum. Although at first there is a sense of having walked on to the set of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,. Or a training area for the Tour de France circa 1912-992. It is all enticingly displayed, old cars, old planes, old motor bikes, old ships, and a walkway means you can get up close and personal to quite a few of the motors. There is the Statue of Liberty. Exotic use of vinyl record,. April 30, 2016.

Life on the left bank. Monthly Archives: July 2015. July 3, 2015. It is hot. Very hot. Our local pharmacie has indicated temperatures of 41 degrees. I am following the advice given repeatedly on TV and the radio – I am drinking water, eating sensibly and not undertaking strenuous exercise – although this of course is very hard for me. Imagine my difficulty at the Tango evening last night at the Mairie. Controlling my impulse to throw myself at a dancer, calling out ‘Le tango, c’est moi! And then, as the ...

Life on the left bank. September 24, 2014. La Mairie – one of my favourite cafes in Paris. It has no truck with wild modern interior design nor the desire of tourists for a real French experience. Look at the cups. What it is, is a busy, friendly, easy cafe with a terrace that looks out over the very interesting Place Saint Sulpice. Not only does Saint Sulpice appear in the first pages of the Da Vinci Code, not only is it within five minutes of our building, not only does it look lovely in summer. Je fer...

Life on the left bank. August 9, 2015. I am always surprised by Paris in August. It is so quiet. The shops shut, the restaurants roll down their shutters, and up go the signs. The streets are deserted, Monoprix is almost empty. But this year in August a lot has changed. For the first year parking in August is not free. Smoking in children’s playgrounds is now unlawful. Although the streets are empty apart from those of us who peer at our Paris street maps, on the river the tourist boats are full. On Satu...

Life on the left bank. May 14, 2015. It was raining, it was cold. A heavy mist hung over the Place de a Concorde. Blotting out the top of the Eiffel Tower (apologies for cutting off the top of the Egyptian Obelisk). T he Tuileries Garden. Was damp and instead of crunching, the ground squelched underfoot. The few intrepid tourists were zipped up tight in warm anoraks. It was 10.55. The Jeu de Paume. And she created advertisements. It was really interesting to see how her avant-garde images translated ...

Life on the left bank. March 19, 2015. Regular readers of this blog will know of my love of the South of France. Some will have read of last year’s trip to Perpignan and the Pyrenees. You may also remem ber my trip to the Estivales of Montpellier. Where local wine producers plied us with wine as the music of the 100% Stones filled the air. Imagine my delight, then, when an evening tasting the wines of Languedoc Roussillon was suggested, and almost on my own doorstep. Sensibly, bread, cheese and saucissio...

Life on the left bank. July 23, 2014. Since our return friends have asked – did you hike? But no, we covered more terrain, quicker and dryer, on the Little Yellow Train. We had intended to have lunch there (breakfast in France, lunch in Spain! But who knew that our holiday in the mountains would take us to the heart of French cherry country – Ceret? And next door to le Boulou. The home of French cork production? We visited the Musee d’Art Moderne. Where the current exhibition is a celebration of art insp...

Life on the left bank. June 22, 2015. I’ve been attending a French atelier. At the Institut Francais. Formerly at City Lit. For several months and our prof (as we say en francais), Dominique Pourteau-Darriet, suggested we enter a competition run by Preludes-Editions. In association with French Elle. If you scroll down the Preludes page. You will see Elizabeth W ‘Dans la cuisine le four chauffe’. That’s me! Next post →. Hymn to the 95. On A Saturday Morning. On A Saturday Morning. The Sixties Beat!
Sunday, July 12, 2015. In my humble opinion, the epitome of the dashing leading man in the movies has to be Omar Sharif who died of a heart attack recently. Mr. Sharif was born in Egypt in 1932 and left us in 2015. You may remember him in many movies including Funny Girl and Lawrence of Arabia, but he was lead actor in one of my all time favorite movies ever.Dr. Zhivago. Only married briefly once, Mr Sharif became a life long bachelor having had a brief affair with Barbra Streisand. Posted by Kelly Gannon.

The 1960's Era
Welcome to the sixties. An era of love, music, rebellion, and change awaits you. The 1960's impacted the world with such force that many aspects of our culture are forever changed. Assassinations, new presidencies, wars, and protests dotted the sixties timelines. The posts describe the sixties through my eyes. Read, and enjoy! Thursday, March 18, 2010. The Sixties Made Me Music, Mods and Politics on a 1960s Essex council estate. The Sixties Made Me. Music, Mods and Politics on a 1960s Essex council estate. I was reminded of one song that doesn’t seem to have been mentioned much or at all, by a re-tweet from @stanyanfan. It was one of my favourites. I’ve Been Wrong Before came out in 1965 when I was falling in and out of love fairly frequently and disastrously – and it spoke to me. I've been wrong before. But when the first high guitar notes snaked into...
