The Kankan Express: Orange Dresses and Fancy Shampoo
http://kankanexpress.blogspot.com/2014/01/orange-dresses-and-fancy-shampoo.html
Friday, January 31, 2014. Orange Dresses and Fancy Shampoo. Natural Essences for Natural Shine! Also, awhile back we were advised to make a list of the things we like about living here (so that we don't just remember the rough parts) and also of the things that we dislike (lest nostalgia trick us into forgetting the rough parts). This is what I have so far:. Things I Will Not Miss. Really terrible roads, worse bush taxis, blatant and. Everything starting two hours late. Things I Will Totally Miss. Six Mo...

The Kankan Express: October 2013
http://kankanexpress.blogspot.com/2013_10_01_archive.html
Tuesday, October 29, 2013. Gone with the Wind. I had a pleasant weekend. On Saturday I made pancakes, did yoga, cleaned up a little, and read Gone with the Wind. This was on the cover of the copy that I read. Spoiler alert in case I wasn't the last person ever who didn't know anything about Gone with the Wind. That goes "history has proved that something usually comes between. But I suppose that if Scarlett had been on the pill and Rhett had just talked about his feelings then maybe they would have figur...

The Kankan Express: November 2013
http://kankanexpress.blogspot.com/2013_11_01_archive.html
Friday, November 29, 2013. The Upside-Down Plastic Fruit Bouquet. This is a fake fruit arrangement that I bought on Halloween. They're popular home and office decorations here, and I love them. I'm not sure why, but I do, with almost the same inordinate intensity that I love True Stories. And giant boxes of crayons and that 30 Rock episode with Thomas Jefferson. Wednesday, November 27, 2013. After we'd collected everyone's quotes and contributions we each got a nice piece of paper and they put out some c...

The Kankan Express: Kankan Farewells
http://kankanexpress.blogspot.com/2014/01/kankan-farewells.html
Saturday, January 25, 2014. There was also this little kid (one of Michelle's host brothers) who was really, really into arranging and re-arranging all the rented plastic chairs, and we thought it was great when he lined them all up in the courtyard, so we took photos and told him how cool he was. He was very pleased; it was adorable. On the day that I moved out of my rooms I put on my best complet. Adama, Adama, and Fatoumata. Save the Children, Kankan, Guinea. Pular Ladies in Kankan. Halimatou said tha...

The Kankan Express: White Elephant Wallet
http://kankanexpress.blogspot.com/2014/01/white-elephant-wallet.html
Saturday, January 25, 2014. Since I'm catching up on photo uploads, this is the wallet that I got from Michelle at our Kankan Christmas White Elephant gift exchange. It wasn't a real White Elephant - there was no stealing and swapping of gifts - because no one wanted to take gifts away from people who seemed really happy with what they chose, like I was with this wallet. Michelle had it made by one of the local artisans, and it has that little map of Guinea. So cool! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

The Kankan Express: September 2013
http://kankanexpress.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html
Monday, September 23, 2013. Rainy Season, Hot Season, Campaign Season. When I started writing this post a few days ago, Guinea's much-delayed legislative elections were scheduled to happen tomorrow, and the BBC had just posted an election overview. In a Q-&-A format. As of this morning, the elections have been postponed until September 28th. And the BBC article, while still informative, is already a little out of date. (Thank you, BBC, for knowing that Guinea exists.). It's pointless, they'll fall and di...

The Kankan Express: August 2013
http://kankanexpress.blogspot.com/2013_08_01_archive.html
Thursday, August 29, 2013. Pilot Project: Community-Level Contraception. Photo courtesy of Save the Children/Guinea. The Save the Children team presented all of this (and much more! There seemed to be a lot of interest in the project, and a lot of support for better access to reproductive health services in general, which was encouraging, and I'm hopeful that I'll be able to work on the project as it continues on the next phase. Conakry office and at the Ministry of Health. The main event was SC̵...

Saturday, February 1, 2014. My Peace Corps Service began when I arrived in West Africa in March 2011, and today I officially completed my Close-of-Service (COS) and am getting ready to head back to the United States of America as a Returned Peace Corps Response Volunteer (RPCRV). Three stops, two plane changes, 9,500 miles (15,200 km). Adieu, Peace Corps. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Guinea, West Africa. Obama's Visit to Africa. Save the Children - Guinea. A Puffin in Guinea:.
