Fictional stories written by Jim Bates
January | 2017 | theviewfromlonglake
https://theviewfromlonglake.wordpress.com/2017/01
Fictional stories written by Jim Bates. Monthly Archives: January 2017. It all started with a simple idea. Al Woodson had been in the living room checking out sites on-line and found something he thought was interesting. 8220;Ellen, listen to this.”. 8220;Looks fine, dear,” is what she’d told him, turning quickly away and suggesting, “Let’s go inside for some nice warm tea. How’s that sound? 8220;What is it? 8221; she asked, gripping her wooden spoon and unconsciously holding her breath. Part” Al h...

Fictional stories written by Jim Bates. Monthly Archives: May 2016. 8220;Well, thanks for meeting with me. It was good talking to you.” The realtor took out a business card and gave it to Charlie Swant who glanced at it, already having forgotten the guy’s name. He then extended his hand and Charlie reluctantly shook it. Well his daughter, Sophia, could think of a few good reasons, telling her dad he should sell the station and use the money to, as she put it, “Retire or travel or something,” ...Never Not...

Fictional stories written by Jim Bates. Monthly Archives: June 2016. All decisions have consequences, some more dramatic or unexpected than others. It was his last day working for Long Lake Hardware and he came through the door with an air of mixed emotions. He was looking forward to moving on with his life, but he was also going to miss the easy camaraderie of the people he worked with. He spent all day in the back room doing exactly what his boss wanted him to do: stacking paint cans, arranging boxes o...

Fictional stories written by Jim Bates. Monthly Archives: April 2016. A Hole In The Ice. Marvin Stenberg learns there is more to life than just feeling sorry for himself. 8220;Dad why don’t you come over for dinner? You know, get out of the house a little. Socialize. Remy and the kids would love to see you.” It was that or some variation of this request his oldest son would make on his weekly phone calls. 8220;What you going to be fishing for? 8221; Olaf asked, oblivious to Marv’s desire to be alone.
Friends Like These | theviewfromlonglake

Fictional stories written by Jim Bates. Jerry, who had been called away from his job as manager of Long Lake Hardware, was keeping a vigil with his mother. He turned to the attending nurse and said, “Sorry about that. My mom can be a little rude.”. To which the nurse replied, smiling, ” Don’t worry. We all think your moms’ a real sweetie.”. Helen, who had been following the exchange with sharp eyes, replied derisively and emphatically, “Humph.”. 8221; he asked, “Won’t that be dangerous? 8220;I know you c...

Time and Tide (and NaNoWriMo) | Kathy Sharp
https://kathysharp2013.wordpress.com/2016/11/06/time-and-tide-and-nanowrimo
Writer on the Beach. Time and Tide (and NaNoWriMo). Asymp; 3 Comments. I’ve never taken part in NaNoWriMo, though it’s been around since 1999. This year I’m in the ideal situation my book is largely planned and I’m 25,000 words in. Another 50,000 words would complete my first draft. In a month. I thought about it carefully, too but I shall not be taking part this year. Now, I know that NaNoWriMo works very well for lots of people, even if they don’t reach the 50,000 word target. Many a good book has ...
Character Building | Kathy Sharp
https://kathysharp2013.wordpress.com/2016/11/27/character-building
Writer on the Beach. Asymp; 3 Comments. I thought it might be interesting, this week, to explain a little more about the method of creating characters by giving ‘voices’ to inanimate objects, particularly buildings. I first learned to do this in an exercise at my local writers’ group, Weymouth Writing Matters. You simply choose your object, and imagine what type of character it might have. I say ‘simply’ but it does take a bit of effort. A foghorn. But the lighthouse also has a job to do in warning s...
Mistaken Identity | Kathy Sharp
https://kathysharp2013.wordpress.com/2016/10/30/mistaken-identity
Writer on the Beach. Asymp; 3 Comments. There was a whole flock of these little wading birds minding their own business feeding along the beach, turning pebbles as the name suggests. Nature does love to deceive the eye, of course. But it did set me thinking. How much do we miss when we look at things? How often do we see what we expect to see, rather than what is actually there? How many of the things we look at are in fact mistaken identities? Larr; Previous post. Next post →. October 31, 2016 at 8:04 am.
Another Fish in the Wall | Kathy Sharp
https://kathysharp2013.wordpress.com/2016/10/23/another-fish-in-the-wall
Writer on the Beach. Another Fish in the Wall. Asymp; 2 Comments. They rebuilt the Chesil Beach Centre home of my café back in 2012. I went along with the Island Voices choir to take part in the opening celebration, just before the Olympic sailing events of that year took place around Weymouth and Portland. It’s part of the writer’s business to pay attention to passing thoughts and curious phrases, I suppose, and to see the story possibilities in the events and objects you encounter. Beware! You are comm...
Safe Harbour? | Kathy Sharp
https://kathysharp2013.wordpress.com/2016/10/16/safe-harbour
Writer on the Beach. Asymp; 2 Comments. With these thoughts in mind, I wrote the following wartime story pure fiction, I hasten to add. It made the long list of the Exeter Flash competition, and, being a seagoing tale, I’d like to share it on this blog:. Message from Tantalus: Majestic reduce speed; Ethel J, Oceania, London Pride and Ringstead hold your position; Ferret do keep up. She’s doing her best, whispered her engineer, shaking his head, sadly. Poor old girl. More haste, less speed, whispered her ...
A Song for Christmas | Kathy Sharp
https://kathysharp2013.wordpress.com/2016/12/18/a-song-for-christmas
Writer on the Beach. A Song for Christmas. Asymp; 1 Comment. Island Voices singing at a Carol Service on Portland. Towards the end of the evening it was the Dorset Wrecks’ turn to sing us a couple of songs but first they apologised: You have such angelic voices, they said, indicating the choir, but we just have big gobs! Well, that’s not exactly what they said, but this is a family-friendly blog. 8216;Heave away, haul away’. The tall ship Marite leaving Weymouth. Larr; Previous post. Next post →. You are...
Green Grows the (Sea) Holly | Kathy Sharp

Writer on the Beach. Green Grows the (Sea) Holly. Asymp; 3 Comments. Green Grows the Holly –. It’s an old Christmas carol I’ve been singing with the Island Voices Choir on Portland this year, and it’s the first thing that came to mind when I needed a seasonal subject. I love plants and holly would do very nicely but since I’m also your Writer on the Beach, let’s stick to the seaside theme and make it Sea Holly. Finding a Voice | Kathy Sharp
https://kathysharp2013.wordpress.com/2016/11/20/finding-a-voice
Writer on the Beach. Asymp; 4 Comments. Portland and its harbour have been an important landing place and harbour for centuries. That’s probably why we have so many castles round here. The most charismatic, I think is Rufus Castle, with parts of its foundations dating back as far as Norman times, I believe. It’s a dour sort of place, parked on a rock overlooking the lovely Church Ope Cove with its many-coloured beach huts, and still standing guard in the teeth of the eastern gales after all this time.
The Magic Cabbage | Kathy Sharp
https://kathysharp2013.wordpress.com/2016/12/04/the-magic-cabbage
Writer on the Beach. Asymp; 3 Comments. One of the first things to do as a writer, so we’re told, possibly before you write a single word of your book, is to create your Author Brand. I fell at the first hurdle here. Can an unadventurous, ordinary person be believed as an author of exciting, magical tales? Some authors have used their powers of invention to create a far more interesting persona for themselves than their real lives merit. A spy? A round the world yachtsperson? So what’s my brand? For full...
A Guilty Pleasure | Kathy Sharp
https://kathysharp2013.wordpress.com/2016/11/13/a-guilty-pleasure
Writer on the Beach. Asymp; 3 Comments. One of the joys of life as a retiree is having the time to watch the tide come in. Pointless? I could watch it for hours, and I do. Wasting time standing and staring is a guilty pleasure, indeed. For full details of all my books, see my Amazon page: tinyurl.com/mygx77l. Larr; Previous post. Next post →. Thoughts on “A Guilty Pleasure”. November 13, 2016 at 5:23 pm. Reblogged this on Crooked Cats' Cradle. November 14, 2016 at 3:42 pm. November 14, 2016 at 4:02 pm.

The View From Macy
The View From Macy. A blog on internet dating seeing's how we're coming up to Valentines Day. Posted on 22:20 - by Macy. Oh yes. OK, but just because I'd been nagged into internet dating, didn't mean that all standards were going to be dropped. Just because Ange from the office said I should do something, didn't mean I should do anything. And because I didn't have hours to spend on this nonsense I came up with a very efficient filtering system: behold. The following were vetoed outright. Anyone who can't...
