The View from the Pits: May 2013

http://theviewfromthepits.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html

Friday, May 17, 2013. Dick Trickle: The Racer. As the Sprint Cup Series prepares for what is arguably its splashiest and most over-the-top weekend, it’s ironic that it comes so soon after the news of the death of Dick Trickle. Splashy and over-the-top? Those are the last words that would be used to describe Trickle. In fact, only one word really fits: racer. Bud Koehler and young Dick Trickle, two Midwest short track legends. NASCAR Winston Cup Series Rookie of the Year Dick Trickle. Trickle never struck...

The View from the Pits: Out in the Garden

http://theviewfromthepits.blogspot.com/2013/03/out-in-garden.html

Thursday, March 14, 2013. Out in the Garden. It’s always interesting watching how different motorsports series handle the mundane realm of day-to-day operations, including job changes. Moving from team to team seems to be regarded with increasing concern based on the annual cost for a team to compete in a given series. Harry Gant earned the "Mr. September" nickname in 1991. Paddy Lowe, seen celebrating a victory with McLaren driven Jenson Button in 2012, will have a much quieter 2013. Out in the Garden.

The View from the Pits: January 2012

http://theviewfromthepits.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html

Saturday, January 21, 2012. Politics, economics, regulation throttle the on-track action. In April of 1995, the Kansas-based Sunflower Rod and Custom Association joined forces with the fledgling National Hot Road Association. The result of the alliance was the very first national drag racing championship event. Art Arfons – who would go on to become a land speed record legend – unleashes an early version of his Green Monster on the Great Bend air field. Can we use that as a race track? When NASCAR turned...

The View from the Pits: Too much of anything...

http://theviewfromthepits.blogspot.com/2013/05/while-trying-not-to-slip-into-catatonia.html

Monday, May 6, 2013. Too much of anything. Peter Townshend of The Who once wrote, "Too much of anything, is too much for me." There's a good reason why that song crossed my mind tonight. While trying not to slip into catatonia during eight hours of Fox Sports rain-lengthened coverage of the seven-hour NASCAR Sprint Cup enduro at Talladega Superspeedway last weekend, I had plenty of time to really think about how Fox presents America’s most popular form of motorsports. Keep watching Fox - you will! But th...

Frank Blank Music: What a difference four decades make...

http://frankblankmusic.blogspot.com/2013/11/what-difference-four-decades-make.html

Saturday, November 16, 2013. What a difference four decades make. The first time I ever saw Tony Joe White was May 1, 1971. I hated him. White had the unenviable task of joining Spirit in opening for Jethro Tull, now at the peak of their powers just days after the release of Aqualung. Tour But the crowd did not exactly embrace White in a warm hug of good cheer. Yesterday, just over forty years later, I saw Tony Joe White for the second time. What a difference a few decades make. 8220;Alright - Friday!

Aerospace Perceptions: 2011 in 2025?

http://aerospaceperceptions.blogspot.com/2014/06/2011-in-2025.html

Friday, June 20, 2014. In the 1970s American TV viewers were captivated by a program titled Marcus Welby, M.D. In the near future, the space community may be equally enthralled by a small asteroid known as “2011 MD.”. 2011 MD in all its infrared glory, as seen by the Spitzer Space Telescope. Launched in 2003, the SST was the last of NASA’s Great Observatories and the only one of the four not carried to space by Space Shuttle. Instead, a Delta rocket carried the SST aloft. Once there, astronauts could jou...

Around here. Sad to say, that’s what happens when two book projects, multiple musical efforts, and a host of Internet-related assignments all barge their way to the top of the prioritization list. My interest in the. Network subjects remains keen, so revitalization is just a question of time. How soon? From a pre-teen p...

Aerospace Perceptions: March 2013

http://aerospaceperceptions.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html

Monday, March 25, 2013. It's more fun to compute. In the late 1980s, I nearly moved to Florida to work for Lockheed Space Operations as a computer programmer working on Space Shuttle systems at Kennedy Space Center. Though a position was targeted for me, a government budget reduction led to that position and others being eliminated – and I dodged a big bullet of landing in Titusville FL only to become immediately unemployed. State of the 1960s IT art: an Apollo Guidance Computer. Friday, March 1, 2013.

Tuesday, July 2, 2013. Failure is not an option. Last night’s explosive crash of a Russian Proton rocket attempting to launch three satellites into orbit dramatically pointed out a fundamental difference between the U.S. and Russian space programs: Russian rockets do not contain Flight Termination Systems. Uncontrolled destruction: last night's chaotic Proton launch. Controlled destruction: a Titan IVA is safely brought down in the wake of catastrophic guidance problems. Aerospace Perceptions: December 2011

http://aerospaceperceptions.blogspot.com/2011_12_01_archive.html

Saturday, December 31, 2011. When there's a will there's a way. The problems is that legacies refer to events of the past. Now, on this last day of 2011, the national will to commit to future endeavors is either not there, or it exists in such a weakened state that the United States now finds itself in a predicament much discussed: for the time being, it's a country that can't even launch its own astronauts. George W. Bush announces the Constellation Program in 2004. Unfortunately, political support for ...

The View From the Phlipside. Wednesday, August 12, 2015. Review - Blind Justice. Blind Justice by Ethan Cross. Blind Justice" is a classic thriller, with all the strengths and weaknesses of the genre. As with the previous book by Ethan Cross I reviewed (" The Prophet. By that I mean it's not a tactic to deceive the world but a tactic to perhaps deceive himself. Unlike a lot of thriller bad guys Almeida feels like there's more substance there. Blind Justice" hits the shelves on August 25. The movie is the...
