Learning About Teaching

Friday, March 9, 2012. The most important part of learning how to teach students math is to be in an actual classroom working with actual students on math. I found this in-class work to be an essential part to better understanding student thinking. Being mindful to represent student thinking in their work and not my thinking in their work is something I will try to keep in the forefront of my math teaching. Links to this post. Learning About Teaching: February 2012

http://thinkingoutloud-julie.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html

Thursday, February 23, 2012. What a treat it is to visit other classrooms! Links to this post. Sunday, February 5, 2012. Below, I have attached an image of how one student was able to group items in a way that made sense to him. When images of 4 groups of 5 were flashed, he rearranged dots to make 2 groups of 6 and 2 groups of 4 and then was able to add the 6's and the 4's to make 10's and the 2 - 10's to make 20. Learning About Teaching: Launching a Problem

http://thinkingoutloud-julie.blogspot.com/2012/03/launching-problem.html

Friday, March 9, 2012. We recently had the opportunity to practice launching math problems with 3rd graders. The idea behind the launch is to give students access to a problem without providing them with a particular strategy to use to solve the problem - maximizing the students' thinking. The problem we presented to the students was:. Lollipops are sold in bunches of 5. We have to figure out how many bunches should we buy so 27 students get 1 lollipop? Becoming a professional teacher: November 2011

http://beduc2011.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html

Becoming a professional teacher. Sunday, November 27, 2011. One way to collect ideas. I was babysitting last night for a couple cute preschool girls when I happened to glance up at their fireplace mantle. There they were looking down on me – a couple of handmade paper turkeys. As I was commenting on how cute they were to the girls, it occurred to me. I could use those turkeys! I now have in my craft file two new crafts that I can pull out for my future elementary school class. Links to this post. I feel ...

Becoming a professional teacher. Thursday, January 26, 2012. Children’s Math Strategies. I had the opportunity to do two different one-on-one assessments with two different third graders, in two different classes, and at two very different levels. I was told that I could not help the children and only evaluate their strategies for finding basic mathematical facts. We were given half an hour to do four questions, but they were all challenging ones. Links to this post. Sunday, January 15, 2012.

Becoming a professional teacher: Constructive Feedback

http://beduc2011.blogspot.com/2012/02/constructive-feedback.html

Becoming a professional teacher. Saturday, February 11, 2012. I think the best definition I found to “constructive feedback” was when I googled the term and found this definition under DirectHit.com. Taking a deep breath, I prepared to take my medicine, knowing I would be receiving “constructive feedback,” for better or for worse. I felt very vulnerable and anxious but knew I had given it my all. Fortunately, both my field observer and master teacher were intent on encouraging my grow...National Coalitio...

Our class discussed some excerpts today from Mindset. 8221; (p. 179). I think sometimes it is good to have some easier assignments instead of only having challenging ones. http://beduc2011.blogspot.com/2011_05_01_archive.html

Becoming a professional teacher. Thursday, May 26, 2011. In one of my final classes this quarter, we were placed in the same small group of five students that we were in on our first night of class when we first met. What was our purpose? We were to spend about 20 minutes quietly reflecting on a poster we had designed together that first time, about what we felt the purpose of schooling was, and then we were to recreate the poster with any additions or changes we would like to make. Becoming a professional teacher: April 2011

http://beduc2011.blogspot.com/2011_04_01_archive.html

Becoming a professional teacher. Saturday, April 23, 2011. I continue to learn how important it is for a teacher to familiarize oneself with different students’ cultures. Author Lisa Delpit (1995), in the book I just want to be myself: Discovering what students bring to school “in their blood”. Links to this post. Friday, April 22, 2011. The Importance of a Guide Dog. January 8, 2017. The Importance of a Guide Dog. For as long as we can remember dogs have been mans best friend, so it makes sense that one day these fun, loveable and loyal canines would become a vital and supporting role for people with disabilities.
