Up on Haliburton Hill

Up on Haliburton Hill. Observances about nature and life from just outside Victoria BC . . . and from sundry other locations. Thursday, August 6, 2015. Today I delivered the painted chair to ReStore for the silent auction next week. It took a while to find the direction but I'm really happy with the result. I used related colours and a nine-patch design on the seat. I had a lot of fun with this project. Here's what the chair looked like when finished. And you can see some of the other chairs here. Up on Haliburton Hill: July 2014

http://uponhaliburtonhill.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html

Up on Haliburton Hill. Observances about nature and life from just outside Victoria BC . . . and from sundry other locations. Sunday, July 27, 2014. I adore flowers. I'm always taking photographs of them. There are over 1,000 images of flowers on my computer. Lately I've been going through them to try to delete some. In the process I've chosen a few summery ones to share with you on a sunny Sunday in July. The others are flowers I've photographed over a couple of summers, each from different gardens.

Up on Haliburton Hill. Observances about nature and life from just outside Victoria BC . . . and from sundry other locations. Monday, December 29, 2014. The bad news is I dropped my Lumix just before Christmas and the zoom function was ruined. At a cost of $160, the repair wasn't worth it. The good news is that my sweetie got me a new camera for Christmas. It's smaller and less of a photographer's camera but I think it will serve well for our upcoming trip. And of course, the partial colour red. All ...

Up on Haliburton Hill. Observances about nature and life from just outside Victoria BC . . . and from sundry other locations. Tuesday, October 28, 2014. Granville Island cement silos - and update. A week ago a friend and I visited our buddy Kath in Vancouver. These photos are of the cement silos down at Granville Island. Aren't they fun! It's been weeks and weeks since I posted here. Life has been busy but not that busy, but somehow I've got out of the habit of blogging. Links to this post. Occasional mu...

Up on Haliburton Hill. Observances about nature and life from just outside Victoria BC . . . and from sundry other locations. Monday, August 3, 2015. A Malcolm Island Wedding. We spent the long weekend attending a wedding on Malcolm Island, off the northeast coast of Vancouver Island. The community called Sointula. Our friend Paul lived there for years and his two sons were born on the island at a place called Mitchell Bay. And what a fabulous celebration it was! Here are our friends and parents of the g...

Joanna journeys with a camera: Do I have a shooting style?

http://joannajourneyswithacamera.blogspot.com/2012/07/do-i-have-shooting-style.html

Joanna journeys with a camera. Wednesday, July 18, 2012. Do I have a shooting style? I'm still learning to use the modes of this camera and I usually shoot in the program mode or the aperture priority mode because I often use the macro setting and like to have the background out of focus. Also I am more and more using exposure compensation and the histogram. I'm beginning to push myself to do more experimenting with camera modes, depending on the situation. As for location, the world around me is what in...

Joanna journeys with a camera: July 2012

http://joannajourneyswithacamera.blogspot.com/2012_07_01_archive.html

Joanna journeys with a camera. Wednesday, July 25, 2012. Calling yourself an artist. Here's a tricky subject: deciding if I am an artist or not. It's something I've struggled with since I was a child. You know how families do that thing of assigning labels to each child? What is “art? In its narrowest sense, visual art is often thought of as paintings, sculptures and drawings- the things we would see in an art gallery. But I would also include collage, multi-media, installations, printmaking, cartoon...

Maggie's Trip to Mazatlan: February 2009

http://maggiestriptomazatlan.blogspot.com/2009_02_01_archive.html

Maggie's Trip to Mazatlan. This blog is a way for friends and family to keep up with our driving trip to Mazatlan along with Maggie, our ten-year-old Border Collie. Last year we explored part of Mexico in our motor home with both our dogs. This year we've rented an apartment in Mazatlan for December and January and will see how it feels to spend a bit of the winter in one place. Tuesday, February 10, 2009. Up on Haliburton Hill. Joanna journeys with a camera: August 2012

http://joannajourneyswithacamera.blogspot.com/2012_08_01_archive.html

Joanna journeys with a camera. Wednesday, August 1, 2012. I haven't really paid much attention to cinematography while watching movies, except for those ones like Winged Migration. When it's really the subject of the film. The camera work is slow and deliberate. There is a contrast between dark saturated colours for the interiors and quite high key, almost blown out exposures outdoors. And always there is the counterpoint of the beautiful turquoise ocean. It's a gorgeously filmed series- and ...Although ...

Joanna journeys with a camera: Exploring point of view

http://joannajourneyswithacamera.blogspot.com/2012/07/exploring-point-of-view.html

Joanna journeys with a camera. Sunday, July 22, 2012. Exploring point of view. The assignment is to pick a subject and go beyond the usual point of view. It's true in photography (as in life) that we do have al habitual point of view. Mine does vary depending on the subject but often I'm looking straight at something or else close up to it at eye level. Looking up into the branches from this side gave some nice results with a cedar tree in the background. Finally I did some macros of the bark and other d...

I've started this blog because I'm taking Kat's Find Your Eye Photography course to learn more about my own visual journey. The first step is to create a photo journal and this is what I've created. http://joannajourneyswithacamera.blogspot.com/2012/06/poppies-in-pot-on-outdoor-table-in-my.html

Joanna journeys with a camera. Tuesday, June 19, 2012. Poppies in a pot on the outdoor table in my friend's back yard. Something dreamy about the out-of-focus bamboo in the background and the backlighted hairs on the stems. I like the light in this photograph. June 23, 2012 at 3:01 AM. Wow it almost looks like a painting! I love the detail of the hairs sticking out of the stem and forming a halo around the buds. July 4, 2012 at 10:24 AM. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Joanna journeys with a camera: Walking without the camera

http://joannajourneyswithacamera.blogspot.com/2012/07/walking-without-camera.html

Joanna journeys with a camera. Friday, July 13, 2012. Walking without the camera. But to me, just seeing the image can sometimes be enough. I found that my other senses were more heightened on this walk. I was hearing the songs of the birds and the sound of running water and the wind in the trees. Also I found I looked up more and saw more of the sky. (This photo is form my archives and shows a bit of what I saw.). July 14, 2012 at 3:35 PM. Wonderful description of your experience! Exploring point of view.

Joanna journeys with a camera: Solving focus problems

http://joannajourneyswithacamera.blogspot.com/2012/07/solving-focus-problems.html

Joanna journeys with a camera. Wednesday, July 11, 2012. Continuing along with my photographic explorations, I'm taking another session of Kat's online courses. This one is the Journey of Inspiration. The first lesson is to think about how I solved a photography problem in the past and how that learning might apply to current problems I'm facing. Everything opened up for me and I was able to take images like these two where there's a shallow depth of field and the focus is on one detail. I have an olympu...

Up On Hartford Ridge. Monday, June 22, 2015. I had my back to Sawyer making sure all of the jars were covered under towels to keep a stray cold breeze from cracking them until they could cool down when he came back up from the basement. He walked up behind me and put his hand on my shoulder to gently pull me around. 8220;You feel up to telling me what that was all about?
