Urban Farmgirlie

Thursday, August 13, 2009. I am a recovering bee hater. Being stung over 10 times as a child will create that fear and hatred. However, as an adult gardener I see their role and importance everyday in my yard. Without them, I would not be harvesting the bounty that I have! I'm sure you have all heard about the recent plight of the honeybees. The decline of them recently is very real and scientists still are not sure why. Some attribute. But they really do not know why. Urban Farmgirlie: August 2008

http://urbanfarmgirlie.blogspot.com/2008_08_01_archive.html

Tuesday, August 19, 2008. Compost Day of Action at the Hillcrest Farmer's Market. I recently volunteered in the Solana Center Composting booth at the Hillcrest Farmer's market. It was great to be out in the community talking to people and spreading the good word about composting and vermicomposting! I'm hoping that they are able to fund a booth there more often since it's right down the street from me. Just look along the right side and click on "Compost Day of Action"- I'm famous! Haha kind of. ;).

Urban Farmgirlie: Squash- to can or to freeze?

http://urbanfarmgirlie.blogspot.com/2009/07/squash-to-can-or-to-freeze.html

Monday, July 27, 2009. Squash- to can or to freeze? I am soon going to be blessed with an (over) abundance of squash. I'm planning to make butternut squash ravioli and soup, however, I wasn't sure if the soup should be canned or frozen. After doing some internet research, I found that most discussions recommend freezing due to the fact that squash is quite dense. This means that the entire jar may not boil while canning and can then grow botulism- not good! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Urban Farmgirlie: In a pickle...

http://urbanfarmgirlie.blogspot.com/2009/08/in-pickle.html

Monday, August 3, 2009. Since I am currently OBSESSED with canning, I decided to make pickles. These are not the type of pickles that most recipes call for though- they are Japanese cucumbers. After some cookbook and computer research, I found a couple of recipes that looked good and kind of merged them into my own. Here's what I did:. I hacked the cucumbers into spears that would fit into the jars I have. I put the pot with everything in my fridge for about 24 hours. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

For the love of things cheap, country, crafty and creative. Sunday, September 8, 2013. Typically hens left in a coop will denude every piece of vegetation in sight. If you are like most urban farmers and unable to allow those happy hens to roam your yard I suggest you supply them with a daily helping of chicken treats. Now I'm not talking about something you need to go to a high priced pet store for.I'm talking about the greens in your yard! Sunday, September 1, 2013. The Best Way to Cook Bacon. I love d...
