The Barn • Wakefield Heritage Organization

In 1915, Frank Hanson, a local farmer, built this unique barn for farrowing and auctioning hogs. It has been in the Barelman family for three generations, with Ward Barelman as the current owner. Restoration of the barn took place in 2000 and included 120 students, teachers, and other community members. It served as the spark to start the Wakefield Heritage Organization. Train service played a major part in the birth of towns across the country and that was also true in Wakefield's history. The train track ran through the town and was completed from Sioux City, Iowa, to Wakefield in 1881. The first depot was built that same year and was finished on January 1, 1882.
