Weeding for Godot: Garden Update - June 2015

http://weedingforgodot.blogspot.com/2015/06/garden-update-june-2015.html

The Ups and Downs of Learning How to Buck the Consumer Economy. Friday, June 26, 2015. Garden Update - June 2015. So far, this year's summer garden has been wonderful; probably the best I've ever grown. Because of my needing to eat paleo (with a huge emphasis on the autoimmune protocol) we eat vegetables, usually at least two, with every meal, and the garden has been keeping up with us. Honestly, we're actually having a little trouble keeping up with it. Nasturtiums in the salad. What can I say?

Weeding for Godot: October 2014

http://weedingforgodot.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

The Ups and Downs of Learning How to Buck the Consumer Economy. Thursday, October 23, 2014. I hit upon a great way to get my compost to break down faster. First I laid down a layer of straw:. Then I put the bean and cucumber plants on top of that:. Then I put a little more straw over that:. Then I had Steve run the mower back and forth over it:. Then I raked it into a row and had Steve run over it again:. This is what I got:. If it looks like a lot more straw than green stuff, that's because it is. Even ...

The Ups and Downs of Learning How to Buck the Consumer Economy. Saturday, June 27, 2015. Annabelle Has Got To GO. The remaining three are being strangely quiet. Jill D. said. Paula, we had the same problem with a hen that wanted to crow! Fortunately, we lived on enough acreage that she didnt disturb anyone, and after a few days she gave up trying. It was the funniest thing to watch. In the meantime, Ill continue to learn from you as you bloom where you are planted. August 7, 2015 at 6:16 AM. I Have An Id...

Weeding for Godot: Good Things Come To Those Who Wait

http://weedingforgodot.blogspot.com/2015/05/good-things-come-to-those-who-wait.html

The Ups and Downs of Learning How to Buck the Consumer Economy. Wednesday, May 6, 2015. Good Things Come To Those Who Wait. If anyone was ever to ask me how I know my husband loves me, it wouldn't be because he puts up with me. Let's face it; there's a fair amount of that going on in both directions. It wouldn't be because he's never teased me about my weight, and always refers to me as his 'cute little Paula', even though I weighed nearly a hundred and sixty pounds at one time (I'm five two).

Weeding for Godot: Householding vs. Homesteading

http://weedingforgodot.blogspot.com/2012/08/householding-vs-homesteading.html

The Ups and Downs of Learning How to Buck the Consumer Economy. Sunday, August 26, 2012. Householding vs. Homesteading. I've since learned that what I'm really doing is householding and homemaking. From Harriet Fasenfest's A Householder's Guide to the Universe. I've learned that our word 'economy' comes from the Greek compound word oikonomos. Which literally translates as 'one who manages a household', from the root words oikos. Which means 'household', and nemein. For 'house' and band. Another idea that...

a sustainable life: so much garden goodness

http://livingthesustainablelife.blogspot.com/2012/07/so-much-garden-goodness.html

So much garden goodness. Here we have sage, bronze fennel, oregano, thyme, and elderflower. i also had a few stinging nettles, some parsley, lovage and a few sprigs of mint for freshness. i'm going to make another batch or two including garlic now that we've harvested that as well. We've been enjoying it in a gin cocktail - strawberry cordial, some good gin and again a top off with fizzy water, garnish with a strawberry and again, summer in a glass. How's your gardening going this year? I just adore the ...

a sustainable life: Farm To Table

http://livingthesustainablelife.blogspot.com/2012/08/farm-to-table.html

When we were in California the beginning of July, B and I had several opportunities to treat ourselves to nice meals out. For starters, we eat predominantly seafood when we are in California, we can't seem to get enough of it. At the first meal that we went out to on a 'date night' we were disappointed that the food was just so-so. We. I'm afraid I was a bit redundant here, as I was so excited today that I decided to post it here and on Tilting At Windmills too :). Well done, you! Starving off the land.

a sustainable life: right here, right now

http://livingthesustainablelife.blogspot.com/2012/07/right-here-right-now.html

Right here, right now. Yes, you read that right, husband has bought a sawmill. we are going to use a lot of wood in our renovation project, since the house will actually have wooden siding when we're done (not like us-style siding, more like swedish-style (more about that later) . husband decided he loved working with wood so much that he wanted to cut all of that wood for the house himself. Cherry tomatoes and regular tomatoes are bushing out nicely. in our climate, we just can't grow tomatoes outsi...

Your Source for Permaculture Design in a Temperate Climate. What is a Temperate Climate? My Birding Life List. In my years of studying about Permaculture, I have often been a bit frustrated with the majority of the authors. They are all living and writing and designing in the tropics and sub-tropics, or are doing amazing things in arid climates. I plan on living in a temperate climate where it snows occasionally where I can’t grow bananas! As Permaculture is about design, just about anything that deals w...

Ramshackle Solid: Beeless

http://www.ramshacklesolid.com/2013/01/beeless.html

Thursday, January 31, 2013. Two weeks ago, we noticed usual activity surrounding the bees. When we went to investigate, we saw our hive was under attack by robber bees. Eric reduced the entrance to the hive. I covered the hive in a sheet. But our measures we no match for the robber bees. Within a day, our six box high hive was an empty shell of the thriving bee metropolis it once was. Posted by Julia Posey. January 31, 2013 at 10:52 PM. I hope you find a new swarm soon. Starving off the Land. Figuring out first-hand food. April 5, 2015. Yeah, it’s been a while. And it’s just within the realm of possibility that some of you have been wondering what’s been going on here over the last three months. Well, I’m here to tell you! Winter was what was going on here, seemingly for the last several years, and there just wasn’t much to tell. Would you have liked to read about how we had to dig the truck out of a snowbank for the third time that day? I didn’t think so. Also on the g...

Throw those books away!

Throw those books away! Sunday, July 13, 2008. Well, I'm done with the 23 things. I can't say I learned a whole lot aside from growing comfortable with RSS feeds, which I had a pathological aversion to in the past. The staff more or less split in my building in their reaction to the 23 things. It more or less came down to those who were already comfortable with technology, and thus were engaged, and those that weren't, who to this day haven't gotten much farther than getting their blog set up. Furthermor...
