West of the 5th. Exploring the back roads of Alberta. Wednesday, November 30, 2016. If I have the time I will try and take back roads while travelling. Sometimes an hour trip by main road can take double or triple the time. I don't mind. This September day I was travelling from Calgary and ended up North of Olds. I came to an interesting crossroads in my journey. Literally, not figuratively. I spied a cemetery, tiny church and an old school.WIN! Also if I ever get married, I know a cute little venue.

Saturday, 8 August 2015. Just west of Fernie, BC July 26, 2015. Morrissey Mines is an abandoned coal operation just west of Fernie, BC. This is one of many old coal ventures that litter the Elk Valley. Named “Morrissey” for James Morrissey, a local pioneer. In existence from about 1902 to 1904. Morrissey Mines is where CNP Coal built their coke ovens. The townsite was not that far away. The ovens are just on the right, heavily obscured. No idea where this leads. There must be over one hundred of these.

Friday, 14 August 2015. Taylor Siding August 13, 2015. This is what is left of the rail line. I walked across this wooden bridge. I will not do that again in the future, the wood is getting rotten. I also got eaten alive by bugs. A further advantage of exploring in winter. I found a couple of glass insulators in the brush. I posed one for a photo and left it at the scene. Cacti in Alberta. Thursday, 13 August 2015. Mayerthorpe, Alberta May 16, 2015. I wrote, scheduled, and pulled this post many times. I wanted to say more about it, I just could not find a way to make it work to my satisfaction. So I stripped everything down. The worst one-day loss of life for the RCMP and the worst multiple-officer killing in modern Canadian history. A memorial and park commemorating them stands at Mayerthorpe, Alberta across from the police station. Their portraits hang inside the building. West of the 5th.

Saturday, 15 August 2015. Ran across these on the weekend of August 1st and 2nd of this year north of Drayton Valley, Alberta. Usually markers of this type have bronze looking lettering on the steel plate. There is no lettering on these and no evidence of if there ever was any lettering. Ages passed without seeing another car. There is prairie and also a lot of muskeg. Lots of muskeg with lots of beaver dams. Many old beaver dams.
