The best of the Wild South. The British Animal Challenge. British animal challenge updates. All posts by asouth. Meeting my MP for #SpeakUp Week of Action on climate change. October 31, 2016. It’s not a huge secret that my political views are left of centre. Over the years I have met a few MPs about various issues. But I have always struggled to put my point across effectively to Conservatives. How do you communicate with someone who doesn’t share any of your values? In preparation for the Week of Action...

The best of the Wild South. The British Animal Challenge. British animal challenge updates. First dormouse at my new site. June 23, 2015. After last month’s disappointment. And the huge proportion of boxes that were being used by birds) I didn’t have high hopes for the dormouse box checks this month. But, once again, I was wrong. On my fourth monthly box check we finally found a dormouse! Torpid dormouse found on my box check in June. Feel free to share this post! May Photography Challenge: garden. Enter...

Too darn hot (or how to help wildlife in a heatwave) | Wild South

https://wildsouthuk.wordpress.com/2015/07/02/too-darn-hot-or-how-to-help-wildlife-in-a-heatwave

The best of the Wild South. The British Animal Challenge. British animal challenge updates. Too darn hot (or how to help wildlife in a heatwave). July 2, 2015. Firstly, an apology for my non-UK readers: this is a post about the weather, specifically, me moaning because it's a temperature that for many of you is perfectly normal. I can't help it, I'm English. Keep a bird bath topped up with clean water. Gets used by lots of wildlife. Don’t forget to feed the birds and hedgehogs – it can be par...Water you...

The best of the Wild South. The British Animal Challenge. British animal challenge updates. The best of the Wild South. Here are what I think are the highlights from Wild South. Let me know if you think I’ve missed any gems! The ferry departing from the small harbour on Lundy. Build a mini pond. 12 ways to find mammals. Pawprints from the mammal tunnel. Whose pawprints are these? In which I search for otters and water shrews, and end up finding something even rarer. In search of water voles. Enter your e...

A hedgehog in the daytime – disaster or delight? | Wild South

https://wildsouthuk.wordpress.com/2015/08/08/a-hedgehog-in-the-daytime-disaster-or-delight

The best of the Wild South. The British Animal Challenge. British animal challenge updates. A hedgehog in the daytime – disaster or delight? August 8, 2015. I was getting concerned for our garden’s hedgehog population – we hadn’t seen one for a while, and the mealworms I had left out went uneaten for a few days (that never happens if hedgehogs are about! But I wasn’t expecting my next sighting of a hedgehog to be in broad daylight. A look at the British Hedgehog Preservation Society website. Or it could ...

Thoughts and experiences of ecologists and conservationists working at one of the UK’s busiest airports. Tuesday, 27 May 2014. Roving Records: Un-bee-lievable find in the North West Zone (20/05/2014). Overlapping ecology surveys and a good dose of sleep deprivation means I'm a bit behind in blogging! North West Zone aerial map. Named after a 16th century soothsayer-witch. Larva ( Lampyris noctiluca. Actually a type of beetle and close to pupating. Or Necklace Ground Beetle. Pretty chuffed with myself whenever I get an aviation reference into a blogpost.). This is all about the good work of JSA Landscape Group. Gatwick's team of grounds maintenance contractors. Biodiversity Gatwick: June 2014

http://biodiversitygatwick.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html

Thoughts and experiences of ecologists and conservationists working at one of the UK’s busiest airports. Friday, 27 June 2014. You might not think there's much in the way of quality habitat around an airport. Fair doos, as I used to think that too. Clay Slope, North West Zone. The past few weeks, the River Mole floodplain at Gatwick has looked the bee's knees (I'll be coming back to the subject of bees! To name but a few. Either way, this lovely wildflower mix is a great thing for biodiversity. N cute be...

I’ve got a couple of projects on at the moment , with Nightjars and reptiles , particularly Snakes, in the local area. The nightjars are driving me mad at the moment , always in the right place at the wrong time,. In the next few weeks i hope to put some images and information together on both these projects,. 2 thoughts on “ Projects. Keep up the good work, always interesting. I always thought nightjars were some exotic bird in India or Asia. Jayne. September 17, 2014 at 7:26 pm. Enter your comment here.

badger cubs – Welsh Wild Stuff

https://welshwildstuff.com/tag/badger-cubs

April 28, 2015. Badgers in the light. I’ve been trying to catch the Badgers in the sett near me in the last of the evening light, each time the wind has been in the wrong direction – leaving me with the fading sunlight in my eyes. Although not great for photography, having the breeze blowing in a constant direction made watching the young cubs at the sett a lot easier! With the young coming ever closer. With the days getting longer i hope to see more of them in the light for a change. Smallest of the cubs.
